rep#8 Franklin twp isn't the only place where people are nice. The
people on the North side of Ellwood are very nice and do things for
their neighbors if they need it. It is also a good area for kids seeing
as how there are over 20 on this city block alone.

Does an honest person destroy the township roads, then leave his
position, sell his home and move away? Just curious why anyone would
defend a person like that. And if you are "friends" with a person who
does something like that, what does that say about you? Things will
never change in this township until people stop taking sides and instead
vote for someone who wants to do what is best for the township, not what
is best for themselves.

I am new to the area and I have 2 children who are 4 and 6 years old. I
am looking for a part time job. I want to work out of my home and earn
some extra money. I want to do something fun and earn extra money. Any
idea's?
:> How 'bout daycare for infants. My daughter is in desperate need for
someone to watch her baby when she is working.
You could stay home with your own and watch someone else's and make a
few extra bucks. What do you think?
08/31/07 (05)
To the 2 posters so worried about meaningful gun control. We will know
who you are as soon as you put signs in your yard saying, "This is a
gun-free home". After all, you should be proud to let the rest of us
stupid gun-owners know just how much smarter and more civilized YOU
are, right?
08/31/07 (06)
We are considering moving back to the area. I am a 1985 LHS Graduate. If
you were moving back to the area - where would you live: Ellwood City,
Ellport, North Sewickley, Franklin Township, Perry Township, Fombell,
Portersville, or somewhere else (If somewhere else please be specific).
I am basing my decision on where is best based on police dept, taxes,
schools, and of course political leaders!

re: (8) 8/30 I'm with you on the riverside thing, I would so like to
move out there, waiting for the opportunity, it is a definite different
class of people (better).
08/31/07 (09)
AMEN - to 8/30 #27. You are completely right about the hydroplaning when
these ruts are filled with water. Also, be fore warned about the new
pavement with all the fresh oils on top now. It will be some time before
this is washed away. This condition is about as bad as an inch of water
on the roads.

What happened to the pizza shop by the 5th street bridge? Did they move
? they had the best pizza in town .. I stopped the other day for lunch
and it was closed.
OH NO Another shameless self toot my own horn on how great their food is
by themselves. Makes me kind of wonder about places that have say their
the best. meanwhile the parking lots & spaces are EMPTY.

if the Ellwood city school board does not pas a nepotism policy there are
a few board members and a atate legislator that can forget about
re-election
08/31/07 (14)
You are all really stupid - if someone wants to kill someone or
themselves they will find another way...quit blaming everything on
guns...
08/31/07 (15)
With the price of buying Electricity in this town I can see why you
would have irate customers...its not the residents who have the anger
problems - its all directed at the Mayor (get rid of him)....stop
blaming the public for your internal problems
08/31/07 (16)
If someone doesn't like the fact that we have a right to own weapons, I
would like to suggest you move to another country more suited to your
feelings and ideas about weapons! OHH that's right those countries
wouldn't let you belly ache about what your problems. GET A LIFE!
08/31/07 (17)
thats wonderful that they paved Fountain Aven - but what about the rest
of Ellwood? 2nd street that merges onto the "new Zeli Road" is
terrible...its all caved in and cut-up ....when is that going to be
repaired? You are only talking about one Avenue - hello, there are a
whole lot more that are in desperate need of repair
08/31/07 (18)
08/31/07 (19)
No one cares what you remember about Ellwood City - knock it off...

I'd like to wager that the next math teacher hired at Ellwood at their

why it is not being taken care of by Penndot.

Hey I love walking down memory lane. As I was reading about all the
businesses that have come and gone I am starting to get choked up. So
many things have changed and not always for the best. But I could never
call any place home but Ellwood. I live in VA. I was visiting a friend
who's Mom had recently passed away and helping clean out the family
home. (the Lady lived in NC all her life) One of the things she collected
were milk bottles from everywhere she traveled. I was shocked to find
one from Fridays Dairy. I was born and raised in Ellwood but don't
remember that dairy. I would love to know the history and where they
were located. I did contact the Historical, but they had no information.

if a doctor was busted for drug dealing then it is my business. was it
someone that may have diagnosed me before? or gave me a physical? was he
accurate? could he maybe still be practicing? do I need to be aware of
whether or not he is?

most murders committed with a gun are done so by a criminal who is
illegally in possession of a firearm and most times that firearm is
stolen. and no, he doesn't have a permit.
the people with legally owned guns are not the criminals.
if a parent leaves his gun accessible to children and something happens
then they should be severely punished. mine are locked up in a gun safe.
and no, a person cannot use his gun to protect property. so if you're
going to rant on about gun control then you should at least learn the
laws pertaining to it first.
example: earlier this year i had someone try to break in to my house
while my family (including my kids) were here. he was stopped and chased
off before he got in but if he would have got in who knows what he could
have done if i didn't have a gun to protect ourselves. we might have all
been dead. but you and your democratic mind don't care about that. you
only want to control everyone's lives like the rest of the dems.

Although I am no longer Catholic and now attend church out of the area,
I was saddened (but not surprised) to read in the Ledger online that St.
Agatha's Church will be closing. It is such a beautiful, traditional
Church filled with history. BVM always felt too cold and modern to me.

To the business owners in town...PLEASE take care of the weeds growing
in the sidewalks! Roundup or some other spray would work too. Every time
I drive downtown that's all I can see...please take a little pride in
our little town!

TO All you anti-gun ignorants. This is a clip of a piece written by John
Lott.
These horrors are hardly unique to the United States. In 1996, Martin
Bryant killed 35 people at Port Arthur in Tasmania, Australia. In the
last half-dozen years, European countries-- including France, Germany
and Switzerland-- have experienced multiple-victim shootings.
The worst, in Germany, resulted in 17 deaths; in Switzerland, one attack
claimed the lives of 14 regional legislators. Of course, since 1997
there have been multiple attacks in the U.S., with the 13 dead at
Columbine.
Prior to Virginia Tech, the two previous most deadly shootings in the
U.S. were the 1991 Luby's Cafeteria massacre in Texas, which left 23
people dead, and the shooting at a California McDonald's in 1984, in
which 21 people were killed.
All these attacks shared something in common: citizens were already
banned from having guns in those areas. Indeed, every multiple-victim
public shooting of any significant size in the United States has
occurred in one of these gun-free zones.
The problem with gun-control laws is not that there isn't enough
regulation, rather that it is primarily the law-abiding, not the
criminals, who obey these laws.

Scotty's gas station on the corner of 2nd and Franklin
Both sold candy and had coke machines outside $.05 for a bottle of pop.

If Riverside is such a nice little community, why is there a tax revolt
and why is the Ledger/Times so full of news about the maneuvers of the
present school board to stay in control. Be happy that you don't have a
council that fights over everything or you would be plagued with more of
the same problems as any other community. I'm happy that you are a
satisfied resident, but the local paper tells another story. There seems
to be as many dissatisfied residents in Riverside as exists anywhere. I
keep hearing about all the Riverside people who want to sell their homes
and move to a low tax area(EC???) but they can't get anyone to buy their
homes once they see how much the taxes are. Enjoy your neighbors and
your view, and keep paying that tax man. How can the Riverside board
look the other way when their cafeteria loses over a thousand dollars a
day??? If they included the managers salary it would be even worse than
that. How in the world did they manage to run up a half-million dollar
cafeteria debt??? The children must eat free in the Riverside schools,
that's quite a benefit if you have children in school, but if you don't
you sure are subsidizing the hungry little birds.
08/31/07 (37)
Isn't it nice to have borough council around to be the whipping boy for
the newspaper. No matter how hard they try, they can't seem to generate
any positive publicity. Oh, they occasionally get a few good words, but
they never seem to get any recognition when they come out with a new
initiative that actually benefits the borough. And I think they do try
hard(most of them) to make the borough a better place to live. If you
gave them a report card what grade would you give them on:
Improving police department
Improving street paving program
Getting grants for community upgrades
Resolving dilapidated buildings issue
Parks and recreation
relationship with mayor
relationship with neighboring communities
While you are assessing the councils' effectiveness, please consider
what YOUR solutions to the problems would be, why you haven't offered
them to council yet, And if you rate them poorly, please ask yourself
why you are not running for a council seat, or better yet, why not be a
mayoral candidate. If you can't do the walk, don't do the talk. Start
comparing your community to others in the area and you will realize that
we don't have it so bad after all. Good luck in your efforts, council.

In response to all the negative comments about the borough council,
borough manager, mayor, police department, electric office employees,
borough workers, school board.....ect...need I go on, Why don't the
people of Ellwood City come together and stop voting for them and look
into "impeaching" them. (for lack of a better term) Keep the Chief, he
seems to be ok. This town needs to be restructured with young people
with new ideas, then maybe Ellwood wouldn't be such a dying town!!!
Next comment/question.....I see someone is reminicing about old Ellwood
City....Does anyone remember the Boiler Room on Lawrence Ave? Who owned
it? I remember going there one or twice to eat, but I was young, so
don't remember much about it.

pretty funny.Apparently you are the one that's all riled up,presumably
due to your lack of mental savvy to counter the original comments,as you
keep attacking me.In fact, whether you realize it or not,by your recent
statements where you say you called the person in question, you support
my first suspicions that your comments were to belittle or slander. If
you knew the person in question why didn't you just call that person in
the first place. This only leads me to further believe that you did not
call the person in question. This should really get you going.

Did it ever occur to anyone that there could be some honest, intelligent
people out there who are trying to improve our schools and community to
make things better for our children? ALOT of people are related to
someone who is a teacher or someone who is working toward that goal. Why
don't the few miserable people who have nothing better to do than twist
EVERYTHING into a negative exchange phone numbers and stay away from the
computer so the optimists can post some worthwhile information and work
on making some positive changes!!!

The fourth meeting of the Ellwood City Neighborhood Watch Committee was
held Thursday August 30 at 6:30 pm at the Ellwood Borough Council
Chambers with a good crowd in attendance. Council Vice President Anthony
Court and Council member George Celli presided over the meeting. Anthony
Celli former Council member was also present.
Guest speakers District Attorney John Bongivengo, Kathy Thalman Blank
and Legislative Assistant Frank Sniezek attending for Representative
Jaret Gibbons brought valuable ideas to the meeting. Anthony Court
reported that the Local Anonymous Tip Sheets are a great success so far,
and are providing of the local police and D.A’s office with valuable
information, all of which is investigated by officers, who then submit
written reports of their findings.
Court stressed that every tip is investigated and urges citizens to
participate by picking up their tip sheets at local business
establishments, the police station or from any council member or Cynthia
Gibbons, Captain of the First ward Neighborhood Watch.
Crossing Guard Ruth Curtaccio also in attendance, will also assist in
providing Tip Sheets. D.A. Bongivengo urges citizens to report any
suspicious or unusual behavior via the tip sheet, or to utilize the
secure web site, www.co.lawrence.pa.us, and click on the TAKE BACK YOUR
NEIGHBORHOOD LINK. Bongivengo urges those who use this site to sign
their name so prosecuting the criminals is a smoother process, he
stipulated that he is the only person who can access this link. He
complimented Ellwood City for the progress it is making and credits the
New Ellwood Police Chief McDonald. He also would like more people to
participate in the meetings and projects to assure greater success. He
offered assistance in procuring Neighborhood Watch signs for our
community.
Mary Alice Meli a reporter for the New Castle News and South County News
covered the meeting, and along with Kathy Thalman Blank donated a number
of cell phones to be utilized by our Crossing Guards. These cell phones
when charged will ring a direct line to the 911 dispatcher in an
emergency, and will assist greatly in keeping our children better
protected. Court and Celli stated that there are a number of people
working behind the scene to ensure our town will be safer.
Kathy Thalman Blank spoke about a Mother’s Watch Program she helped to
form years ago, including Safe Houses where children could go if being
pursued or harassed. She said Anthony Celli was a member of the local
Jaycees who provided bumper stickers, window decals and signs, she also
realizes how much things have changed since then. She and Meli also
would like our local elderly members to be cautious and stay alert to
scams and to be safe.
Court is checking particulars on restarting Safe Houses in Ellwood. He
will present his findings at the next meeting, on September 27 at 6:30
pm in Council Chambers. Ellwood residents are urged to attend. Guest
speakers will be announced before the next meeting. A contest for area
school children is in the works, to design a Logo for the Neighborhood
Watch program. The details will also be presented at the next meeting.

I saw a postcard recently on eBay for "Oliver Park" in Ellwood City. It
had a picture of a beautiful, large home (?) in the background. Where
was this park located (if anyone could help me)? (My father-in-law
thought it was around Todd Avenue on the North Side. It showed a heavy
snow and the card was dated October 11, 1906 (snow was early for the
season). Is this home still there? Is the park still in it's state as
shown in 1906 or was it developed? Thanks in advance for your time.

I took my older teenage son to the EC emergency room a few months ago
and they actually belittled him while he was sitting in one of the two
chairs they use for triage. They made it sound like he was a childish
kook at first until they realized he was really in distress and put him
in a bed. Before that point, people were actually looking out from
behind the curtains of the cubicles their families were in to see who
they were talking to. I am soooooo mad at myself for not reporting that
nurse.

Received the paper from the school yesterday stating that no snacks of
any kind may be sent to school.
Why , WHY is the government involved in mandating laws and rules that
should be based on PERSONNAL CHOICES? Have we, as a society, become so
brain- dead that people can't see where all this is going? Look at
history - personnal freedoms were not taken away from overnight. It was

.Re 8-28-07 # 23 It's not anger,it's pity and concern for you over your
inability to counter reasonable and rational comments.Again,is that the
best you can do..??In a debate if one side doesn't have the mental savvy
to counter the other sides opinion they are considered to be in the
weaker position and if they attack, slander or belittle their opponent
or lose their temper they are immediately and justifiably ruled the
loser.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What brought out this anger in you? I have no idea how "Is that LB?"
could rile you up like this. I just talked to LB and she and I are fine
with each other.
And if we had a debate I would not belittle you but I would win because
I believe I have a greater intellect than you.
At least I don't get angry over 3 words that had no meanness to them.
And never ever pity me. I have no problems with most people I meet. You
have no reason to pity me.
And concern for what? Do you think I am frightening? Am I a loaded gun
waiting to explode?
Just what is your problem???????
And to finish

Dear Mayor,
I am writing to encourage you to make Craig Ferguson, yes, the Craig
Ferguson from “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” an honorary
citizen of our beloved town.
Craig is studying to become an American citizen as early as this summer.
He’s a hardscrabble Scottish immigrant doing a low paying job no
American wants -- working the late shift at CBS.
By making Craig an honorary citizen, we are sending a message to the
halls of Congress and The White House. That message: America wants Craig
Ferguson on our team. Let’s roll out the red carpet for this lovable,
important C-list celebrity.

Hi! I hope everyone is doing fine!
I have nothing to gain by posting this, but I just wanted to let
everyone know that the annual Pie Festival is going on this evening
(Thurs. Aug. 30) over at Helling Stadium. Come on out and have a nice
time! Before long old man winter will have many of us hiding in the
house!
In my oppinion, far to many events happen in our town that go under
publicized! Like the Fall Fest that will be going on in the downtown are
on September 15th.
Its time we put 'our money where our mouths are' and get out and join
in! A lot of effort goes into events such as these... and they only get
better with the communities support. So come on, what else do you have
to do this evening?! Go check out the Pie Festival!!!

if the ellwood school baord does pass a nepotism policy, there are new
people running in the fall that plan on hiring relatives
08/30/07 (17)
08/29/07 (05) You are correct - Jan Marshall and Mike Laveing never were
charged or fined for anything, let alone for stealing from the township.
It is quite common for mistakes in interpretation of the bidding
regulations and that was all that the problem was - just a matter of
using the wrong trucking company for purchase and delivery of stone for
the roads! All the proper actions were taken as the code book and
sunshine laws sets forth except the item named above! So stop
fabricating your own interpretation of events just because you dislike
these persons!
08/30/07 (18)
I have enjoyed the history of Ellwood that everyone submitted. Now I
have a new one.
What would you do if you had $45,000?
08/30/07 (19)
After reading the comments about the borough gun ordinance, and after
seeing how the NRA members defend their right to bear arms, we can
probably conclude that this city/county/state /country will never have
any meaningful gun control. I must wonder how we tolerate the 30,000 gun
deaths in this country every year. If all those people got shot to death
on the same day, would we clamor for gun control?? I don't think so. And
yes, people with gun permits do shoot other people to death every day,
to state otherwise is idiocy. I thought John Wayne died years ago, but
he's alive and well in EC, waiting for his chance to shoot outlaws and
anyone who would take his guns away. I'll bet it's nice to live in a
civilized country. Good Hunting!!
08/30/07 (20)
I read that 100 times as many children shoot and kill themselves and
each other with an unlocked gun in the house, than people protecting
their property and families kill criminals trying to get into their
houses. I guess that is a small price to pay for that feeling of
security and well being that having a gun under your pillow gives you.
More children kill themselves and other children with their parents guns
in this country every year than sex offenders kill children in this
country every year. What do you think the penalty should be for a parent
who negligently leaves his/her gun where a child can get it and kill
themselves or another child. Sex offender/killers are usually sentenced
to death. What do you think the negligent parent should get??? By the
way, I'm not defending sexual predators, just illustrating the tolerance
we seem to have for kids being gunned down by one another in their own
homes, most of which should be avoided. Don't our children deserve
better consideration than that. And we call ourselves a Christian
nation. We accept the murders of our inner city youth as "part of their
culture". I don't remember murder on this scale before the proliferation
of guns in this country. And we justify all this killing (In Iraq, 3600
American soldiers have been killed since March of 2003, we shoot each
other to the count of abour 2500 a month in the good old USA) so we can
say we have to have guns in the house to defend ourselves. Heaven help
us.

Why do the borough employees who collect the electric bills have to be
subjected to abuse and threats???? Move their offices next to the police
department so they will have protection from this abuse, or give them a
way to signal the police if they feel like they are in danger. C'mon
council, find a solution to this problem, and stop exposing your
shortcomings to the Pittsburgh papers, you make us all look like a bunch
of backwater jerks. How long are you going to let this go on??? Have
some concern for the employees who bring in the money to pay your
monthly salaries, there must be a BETTER WAY!!!

Say what you want about our little town, but I, for one am glad that we
don't have all the phycos and freaks that they have in other citys.
Sure, we have a few but hopefully with our new chief's apparent

I would just like to Thank everyone that took the time to attack my
comments. It just reminded me how rude and mean the people of Ellwood
City are. I just moved back to the area a little over the year ago and
now I am considering moving away for good. People were rude to me in
High School and I kept in touch with no one. You wonder why no one is
moving to this area and your precious Ellwood is dying all around you.
Maybe you people should try to smile and say "Hi" to strangers and be a
more welcoming community and perhaps you will be able to grow. Instead
everyone wants to stab each other in the back and complain about whoever
is in office. Instead of praise, you plot to get rid of them behind
their backs and then, when you are successful you cry their praise and
wish they would come back. After living in a "caring"and "friendly"
community for 8 years after graduating from LHS I must say; I am not
surprised that not much has changed in this area, and I will do all I
can to ensure my children do not go to school in the Ellwood City Area
School District. Good Luck good old EC. Please feel free to rip me apart
as soon as I post this. After all communities shouldn't care about each
other or be positive to one another. Just keep focusing on all the
negatives and make sure to blame someone or anything else for all of
your problems. Thanks for the warm welcome, and hopefully it will be a
quick good-bye as well.
the best advice i can give you is to judge ellwoodians by your personal
interactions with us. the worst thing you can do is judge us by what
someone on this soundoff posts. there are individuals who look thru
every post and do their very best to attack it. go about your every day
business in ellwood and you will find the vast majority of us as normal
and nice as any other town you will live in.

I have had 2 of my children in an ER this past year and it is like a big
chore for the nurses to take down the information (they were too busy
talking about "food" or "what so and so were doing"). The nurses did not
even assist the dr. I had to do it and I am not a nurse. Thank goodness
I was with my little one. The dr. used that like super glue to close his
cut on his forehead and it started running down and almost to my child's
eye. It isn't even a good FIRST AID station.

There are only a few good doctors and a small percentage of kind nurses.
Some of the nurses there should retire and work from home doing mailings
or somehting. There are some who are so misserable and just plain
ignorant that they should never be allowed to work with or speak to
patients.
08/30/07 (27)
As far as the roads getting paved, why is the last 2 miles of 488 in
Perry township not being repaired along with the rest of the state
highway into Ellwood? Don't travel this portion when it rains the ruts
in the highway from the heavy trucks fill with rain causing your car to
hydroplane back and forth like the turnpike cars in Kennywood, and don't
expect the guard rails to assist you if you lose control they are just
hanging in mid air along most of this section of highway ever since the
huricanes a few years back washed out the berms & hillsides.

i believe only the school board can hire people, I think the
administrators interview to screen applicants but the board must vote on
them. I'll bet that the administrators can be influenced to reccomend
someone like a relative if one is eligible. You will never get a fair
chance at getting hired without a nepotism policy, particularly if a
school board's relative is in the mix. That must have been a good
conversation you were listening to. I wonder what THEY will do to keep
the school board from voting on a policy.

RE 8-27-07 # 21..Yes indeed Perry Township secretary Jan Marshall and
supervisor Mike Laveing were citied and fined by the State Auditor for
questionable accounting and money handling practices about a year or so
ago. The story was carried in both the Ledger and News. The State Auditor
also recommended that a full audit be conducted. The township could not
afford the cost of a full outside audit,so one was never done.
--------------------------------------
Where ever you got your information from was incorrect.
Jan and Mike were never charged with anything because they didn't do
anything wrong.
The state audit found an error in bookkeeping but no problems that could
not be fixed.
And there was an outside audit done . A firm in Pittsburgh did the audit
and presented the information at a public meeting.
Neither Jan nor Mike have any reason to steal from the Township. They
are both honest people.
If you have this information from the Ledger or the New Castle News, I
would appreciate a link to read it. I think your interpretation of the
articles is wrong.

Do you know anyone in other school districts? Ask any official in ANY
district. The administration or a committee of teachers/administrators
only RECOMMEND people to the board. The school boards do the hiring.
They are the ones who say yay or nay. An anti-nepotism policy only stops
the hiring of close relatives. Friends of board members could still be
hired. Is it worth it? It probably still is worth it since there are so
many that just get on the board to hire famliy. Sad for our kids, but
true.

Wow. Following little boys around. That's about the funniest thing I

that it's not ok to destroy other people's property.
Nice cover, but if you really cared about getting the message out to
everyone, you would have done it vocally, at the time you witnessed it
instead of via this site.
08/28/07 (05)
08/27/07 (43)
How much dope did you smoke before you wrote this?
Really as I type this I have to wonder if your senility will prevent you
from understanding it anyways, but I will give it my best shot.
Mayor Clyde had it correct when he said that you do not see people with
firearm permits using their guns to commit crimes. It doesn't happen.
Never. Why, you ask? Because to get the permit you have to undergo a
background check, which requires you to get references and not have a
criminal history. The people who go take the time to get a permit simply
want to be able to protect themselves and their families from criminals,
and who is anyone to take that protection from them?
What I believe that you want to accomplish is removing guns from the
hands of the criminals. I have to ask you though, if someone is intent
on committing murder and their victim is in Ewing Park, do you really
think that they will say, "Well I can't kill them in the park because I
am not allowed to have a gun there."
They are already planning on committing MURDER (punishable by life in
prison or DEATH), so what is a misdemenor, $100 fine, going to prevent?
Nothing, and it's that simple. The only ones that will pay any mind to
that ordinance is the law abiding citizens that needed the protection in
the first place.
If murderers, rapists, muggers, and the rest of the crime family
listened to ordinances we would just pass them, and nobody would ever do
wrong or need to go to our overflowing prisons.
To be more specific, this ordinance was another flagrant attempt by
councilwoman Jones to ruin the mayor, and nothing more. He couldn't give
a single reason why guns should be banned. He listed two verbal
arguments that didn't even involve firearms. So what's next, an
ordinance preventing arguments on borough property?
Council, specifically Mr. Jones, has done everything they could to ruin
the mayor and make him appear to be the only thing holding Ellwood back.
The truth is that in his attempts to ruin the mayor's name and take over
his position, Mr Jones has only ruined himself.
The NRA didn't even take the absolutitst approach that you claim they
did. They offered to help Ellwood write a new ordinance that would
prevent people from carrying in the municipal building and other areas.
Personally, that is unacceptable due to the fact that the PA
constitution specifically prevents boroughs from making any laws that
trump state laws. What does the state say? It says that I can't carry a
gun into a courthouse and guess what, Ellwood doesn't have one!
Maybe you anti-gun nuts oughta take a reading class with Mr. Jones and
the rest of council before you make your next post!
If Ellwood does construct a this ordinance in any manner, I will do my
best to be the first in line to file my lawsuit.
08/28/07 (06)
so who was the person involved in the drug bust?
08/28/07 (07)
08/27/07 (43)
I disagree with you, I will support the NRA and a citizens right to
carry a weapon!
NRA*NRA*NRA*NRA*NRA*NRA*NRA*NRA*NRA*NRA*NRA*NRA*NRA
08/28/07 (08)
To the anti gun person- I don't believe you have thought out your ideas
on gun control issues. If you had you would see the flaw in your logic.
If you take the right to carry away from law abiding people, the only
ones left who had weapons would be the criminals. So you see you might
be one of the first to be targeted by the crimanal who will have the
gun!
Peace-out

To the person yapping about gun laws and why we should ban them in
Ellwood, heres the second amendment:
Amendment II (the Second Amendment) of the United States Constitution,
which is part of the Bill of Rights, declares a well regulated militia
as "being necessary to the security of a free State", and prohibits
Congress or any other government agency from infringement of "the right
of the people to keep and bear arms."
It says milition but also says "poeple".
the old saying "if you outlaw the guns, only the outlaws with have guns"
it's not just an old cliche, it's a fact.

I agree with you this was the worst baseball season ever. My son plays
on the farm league also and has been asking about the trophy game. it
might not sound that exciting to some of the league officers but to 7 &
8 year old boys it is very important. However, to parents what do we pay
all the money at sign ups for? I know a hat, and t-shirt do not cost all
that much, (especially when the shirts hardly last a season without the
letters, and numbers peeling off) This is my son's second year and both
of his baseball shirt are junk. Also you better hope it doesn't rain
because those games are just forgotten. (once again not important to the
league officials, however, important to the boys & girls?.

Funny/Not Funny
About 2 weeks ago I was eating at a local restaurant and a group of loud
people were talking nearby. Overheard,"We have to keep the new law of
hiring relatives from being voted on and approved ."
Years ago,I asked an administrator who does the hiring? The person said,
"The Board".
At a later date I asked a person on "The Board" the same question.
Their answer:"The Administration".
I admire all the teachers who were hired on their own qualifications
without knowing anyone.

I think Inmetco also has a policy, maybe someone will verify that with
details.
inmetco does indeed have a nepotism policy
08/28/07 (21)
Haha..two things.
One, I am a graduate from Lincoln High School. If you think the school
was dirty for orientation, wait a month or two after school begins! Chew
spit on the floors, ceilings, railings, gum on the floors, ceilings,
railings, regular spit on the floors, railings. Kids have been going
through that for years. Now that your child is in 7th grade, he will get
the same experience! It's been that way too long for them to change
because of one new parent to the high school.
Two, I am working on my Secondary Ed. Degree. I can clearly see both
sides of the anti nepotism policy, but I am more in favor of NOT having
it. I have no ties to the school board, I was not a real popular kid in
high school, but I loved the teachers, and the atmosphere in general. I
would LOVE to teach there! If my qualifications are better than others
running for the same position, I would like to be hired. I also believe
that I should have a slight edge on the others due to the fact that I am
an LHS Alumni. I know how things run, I helped the school as much as I
could, and was relatively active. A slight edge above everyone else,
given by the schoolboard, would be a nice little generous action they
could take! I still have a year left in College so we'll see what
happens!

the roads. Who would have thought you could pack so much humor into one
small paragraph? Just hope I can catch my breath before you get another
post on. I'll bet it will be just as hilarious.

Who remembers: Daverick's, Rose's Bakery, The video arcade at the end of
the 5th street bridge, Ricka's, Winky's, The car wash where Unimart now
is? Wow those were the days!
Honestly I am 40 years old but I wish I had been born and had the chance
to grow up in the era my wonderful parent's did. Life was better then,
yes there were struggles, but I believe there were more opportunities!
I had totally forgotten about the car wash where UniMart is now. I'm in
the same age group as you, and I think it would have been great to
experience the town we once had. My 4 siblings are all older than me,
and they got to experience a lot of the things in this town that I didnt.
But in turn, I got to experience a better town than my children. We had
so many nice stores in this town when I was younger... AND a movie
theatre! I vaguely recall going to the Manos, maybe once... but I
usually went to the Majestic everytime the movie changed, until its
untimely demise. It needed some TLC, but I'm sure it was a beautiful
place in its time. I recall going to see the original Star Wars movie
there. I think if we work together as a community, we can have a
thriving downtown once again.

I was at 7th grade orientation at Ellwood this week. The school is
filthy. The walls are all stained and dirty and the steps look as though
they were waxed right overtop of the grime. Why does it have to be this
way? Shouldn't the walls be scrubbed? Get a power washer or something.
That can't be healthy for our children.
I agree, I was there last week. It is a mess and definitely showing it's
years. There was dirt everywhere, why wait a week before school to start
to clean the place?
I agree the place is a mess, and yes its getting older and showing its

commons area where they can monitor who comes in and out of those doors,

I travel the Koppel bridge every day and you should see how fast
everyone goes over it now...I even go slower if I am approaching the
bridge and have a couple of semi's in front of me .....don't want to be
on that bridge with the truck weight. So, when will this problem be
fixed??? That bridge is not very old. Must have been a cheap deal
08/27/07 (02)
So why didn't you sign your name?
08/27/07 (03)
Frank LaGrotta! How in the world do we get rid of someone who we voted
out? He is still getting paid the same as he was while in office and
probably more. The taxpayers don't have any say-so
with their vote, thanks to FRANK!!!

You have got to be kidding me, A doctor selling drugs. What is this
world coming to?

Perry 8-24-07 # 3..Dear Perry Township...Is that LB... What, You can't
counter reasonable, rational comments other than attempting to belittle
or slander someone that you "assume" made a comment or statement that
you don't agree with...What does this say about you..??

RE: 08/24/07 (08)
Wow. Following little boys around. That's about the funniest thing I
ever heard. I guess it takes and adult to understand that I am just
trying to get the message out that people need to teach their children
that it's not ok to destroy other people's property. I should have known
that someone would get all bent out of shape and make more out of the
comments than necessary! Just par for the course with this page.
08/27/07 (07)
Here we go again, lets pick on Frank LaGrotta. Leave the guy alone. We
need to be breathing down Gibbons neck, not LaGrotta. You people need
something to do. You have too much time on your hands. Get a job.

Perry in the news again ? John Zias for roadmaster ? He was seen
cleaning ditches on lookout Ave !Huraw for John, with his CDL license he
could drive the not used much truck in question? Ill vouch for John ? He
knows as much as anyone bout being a road master, course Mike Laving was
the one we should have kept !

Are we allowed to speak about the Roller Rink and the STRANGE happening
there now that it isn't a sponsor?
08/27/07 (11)
To the person who wrote.....I think everyone should give their name
after their comments.
Are you serious??? Do you know how many people would maliciously sign
"someone else's name"? Keep the forum as is! You know what they say, "If
it's NOT BROKE don't try n FIX IT!".

I watched that same very long-haired boy bully kids around all summer at
the ball fields. I reprimanded him several times and he more or less
laughed at me. It won't be long before he bullies the wrong person and
this kid gets it back. Sad part is, his mom will be the one to raise
heck when it happens.

The administrators claim the school board does the hiring, the school
board claims it’s up to the administrators. You have to wonder, if
nothing questionable is taking place, why won’t anyone take
responsibility for who gets hired? Could it be, they know what they are
doing is unfair? Hmmmmmm.

08/24/07 (14)
Ellwood is in need of a math teacher... A board member has a daughter
looking for a full time math teaching position, wanna take bets on who
Ellwood hires, and how quietly they do it?!
I don't need to take bets I believe you.
Years ago I applied to work in the school as a sub in the office at
anyone of the schools. I got called
and was there awhile. Then along comes this girl who had a relative and
got hired full time in one of the schools full time. Never even subbed.
All depends on your last name.

Another great job on a drug bust in Ellwood City since we have Chief
McDonald. It is hard to believe that a doctor working at the emergency
room at the Ellwood City Hospital was involved in selling drugs. I am
glad that we have the new police chief. Keep up the great work. If you
want to read about it you have to read it in the new castle paper. The
Ledger and the Times had nothing in there at all about it. Keep the
Drugs out of Ellwood. GREAT JOB CHIEF McDONALD. KEEP UP THE WONDERFUL
WORK. YOU ARE AN ASSET TO ELLWOOD CITY.
We should be told who the doctor is...
08/27/07 (16)
In response to the Ellwood teachers, no the guidance position was not
interviewed for, they just moved around some inside people. The math
position has been posted on PA-Educator for about 2 weeks now, but it
will be interesting to see which relative they hire...

I heard that Cathy Pansera thanked Dave Reese for writing the nepotism
policy for her. I hope he supports it to. Maybe we will get some
fairness in our district, it sounds like most people are fed up with the
way things have been done for so long. Some of the comments I read
express real bitterness.
08/27/07 (18)
That was a great drug bust thought it would never append, had to chuckle
do anyone hear about the womanly informant, go figure like we didn't
know that saga. Oh it will be her neck in the noose someday wont it now.
how many children does she have know.

The Elwood City Girls Softball League has the expenses from the year
before at each sign-up. All you need to do is ask to see it. We use to
send a copy home with each girl that signs up, however no one seems to
read it so why make 400 copies. So at next years sign-up it will be
there

In response to 08/23/07 (20) Dori IS the problem. Just because you are a
friend or relative of hers, doesn't mean that you have to be blind to
what has happened and what has not been done properly in the last two
years during her time as roadmaster! As for your comments about the
supervisors and secretary being cited and fined...that is a false
comment-no citation or fine was ever issued to anyone! Get your facts
straight please!

may I ask a question has anyone out there in ec org land ever had
cosmetic dentistry done? such as porcelain veneers or lumineers? and if
you have had any of these processes done, who would you recommend ?
approx cost of this whole process? was it painful? do they last?

to no.9:
If you think the Lincoln is dirty and poorly maintained wait a month or
two. This unclean situation shows little respect for all the good kids
who go there because they want a school to respect and say they are
from. It is hard to understand why a better cleaning job was not done in
three months the school was empty but you can't spend much on cleaning
when the boss will make $140,000 this year. Does the school board ever
take a walk through the building? Remember we have others from out of
town at basketball games and plays and recitals and we don't measure up.
08/27/07 (24)
does anybody know what the new building on 351 by the 60 exit is going

If you read the sign at that location, it says turnpike distribution
warehouse.

opinion on the truck.
Dori & Guy when you vote I hope its for the good of the Twp. Remember
what the tax payers want.
We will never be able to afford this truck again. We got the grant the
truck is paid for keep it. Lets move on to other things. Like maybe
patching some holes in the roads.

I just wanted to say thank you to the local fire companies for their
assistance and hard work during the floods this past week. Our basement
did get a lot of water, but we were able to salvage what we could and
get it done ourselves. While going to the laundry mat to wash my clothes
that were in storage in the basement, I saw at least two places being
drained by the fire departments. Thank you and we appreciate your
dedication to our town. I don't think that you always get the praises
you deserve in what must sometimes feel like a thankless job! Awesome
job ladies and gents! Lesley

If you were moving back to the area - where would you live: Ellwood
City, Ellport, North Sewickly, Franklin Township, Perry Township,
Fombell, Portersville, or somewhere else (If somewhere else please be
specific)
I am looking to move back to the area but sure where is best based on
police, taxes, schools, politics!

Do you remember: Brownell Shoe Store across the street from J C

side Cosmo Geniviva owned it.

I have feedback forthe article on 8/20/07 (03) Carl Johns was my

hands and get shocked. Good old days

In response to.....
European Bakery was the greatest!! Remember the vanilla cookies with the
chocolate in the middle, the biggest ladilocks you have ever seen,
chocolate cakes, Mary Popoff doing all the decorating (which was the
best in town) and Kime and Ronnie in the back.....again, what great
memories!
And don't forget Lucky! I have old 8mm films of that bakery and the
people working in it! My mom worked there "Once upon a time". What great
memories.
I would love to see those 8mm films, I am the grand daughter of Kime and
Mary. You can e-mail me @ nurse4u_22@hotmail.com or post a message here
and I will respond as soon as I can.
Thanks

I know to some extent, gasoline prices are region specific.
However, the price around Ellwood City over this weekend ranges from
$2.69 - $2.85 per gallon. We were in Erie Saturday and prices were $2.49
- $2.59.
So Ellwood gasoline stations, please drop your prices and quit ripping
off consumers. You don't know how much that 20 cents a gallon savings
would mean. Thanks!

So those fanatical mis-interpreters of the constitution, the NRA, have
wom the battle in Ellwood. This little controversy threatens to become a
national "cause-celebre" if only our council would carry on the fight.
What sense does it make for anyone to have the right to carry a gun
anywhere? There exists no constitutional right to bear arms, except
through the formation of a well-regulated militia. That's what the text
says. Our mayor's habit of carrying a gun is just one more example of
this man's poor leadership. The NRA takes an absolutist position on all
gun issues, resulting in their downright absurd opposition to any
attempt at protecting citizens from the rampant destructiveness of our
gun culture. Support the council in their attempts to make Ellwood a
model of responsible firearms regulation!

Does anyone have any information on the Ellwood City Baseball
federation?? My son played on one of the Farm Leagues and never received
a trophy!! This is our 4th year with the program and by far the worst!
For starters, when other school districts are completing their season,
we are just starting ours, in the middle of the summer! Also, just about
every other time we went to use the pitching machine, it was out of gas
and extension cords were not long enough. Then later come to find that
they stopped paying our umpire!! He continued to come out of the
goodness of his heart. This is so sad that the Farm Leagues,
Instructional and T-Ball leagues were left out in the dust. We have two
children who love to play baseball, but we dread the Ellwood City
baseball season. We pay for two children to play, a t-shirt and hat, and
a trophy. My younger son, first year playing t-ball, wonders why he
hasn't got a trophy like his older brother's.
GET IT TOGETHER!! Where is their trophy ceremony game??????????????????

Regarding the comment on only the young children working the concession
stand because not enough adults will work, that is wrong. I personally
asked about working, I wanted to work my two-hour shift to get my $20.00
back. I was told to ask about it because there were only two home games
and I wanted to make sure I got my shift. My daughter then came home and
said that she was working because the kids had to work, it was not open
to the adults. However, she would get paid $20.00 for working it. I hope
that part is true.

spent 1,000 dollars ,
now there's a real shocker this group spent some money
on the dark side ,are you sure some ppl are not funneling money for

these groups?

I am not sick and I am not lying. Pictures were taken of the paint. What
reason would I have for lying? I myself grew went to Ellwood. And I
wasn't blaming everyone from Ellwood. I just think it's a shame that
"Some People" have to be that way. I would think that you would feel the
same way if it happened at your football field. Don't take it so
personally! Wait! I know what your going to say "It is personal" Well
it's not.
I still think you're lying so it isn't personal to me at all. I just
have a question... IF you witnessed the painting, then witnessed boys
telling some adults and it bothered you so much that you couldn't wait
to write about it on soundoff, why didn't you yourself step forward and
do or say something? I actually find it creepy that you would follow
little boys.

Perry 8-22-07 # 7...Dori is not the problem. None of the present
supervisors are qualified for the position. The chairman is functionally
illiterate and reads at about a 7th grade level and publicly threaten a
resident at a monthly meeting which was reported in both the local
papers. Anyway, these horrible roads in the township have been getting
this way for the last 10 to 12 years. So blame the deadbeats during that
time. Remember those supervisors that blamed the weather when all along
the surrounding townships maintained and even improved their roads.
