re: 02/12/07 (14)you people who arent teachers>

I am not a teacher, but being related to one, I can tell you that she doesn't have three months 'off'. For what she teaches, she attends classes and seminars throughout the summer. Some are out of state. I also know that she is respected on one hand for the teaching job she does and the time she puts into the classes AND for expecting the students to try hard to gain knowledge from the class. On the other hand, she is, many times DIS-respected for the very same things. It's tough when students go to a class and choose NOT to learn or study or do the work involved with that class. It is also unfair that she be told she is expecting too much from students when what she is teaching is coming from the guide in front of her as required for that particular class. But I understand the students do enjoy the fun things she incorporates into the teachings to make the class interesting.
We certainly do have some teachers who have lost their steam, their true desire to teach and get satisfaction from a job well done, but once again, don't lump all teachers into one big ball.
As far as teaching ABC's, etc., maybe you need to take a shot at that part.
If all teachers are worth nothing, why do you send your kids to school?!? I have friends who have home schooled. Depending on the grade of the child, it wasn't as easy as they thought.

02/14/07 (02)
these kids need to be taught respect and discipline. obviously they haven't been.

**Did you teach your child to walk? Sure you did. Did you teach your children to swear? I bet not. Did you teach your child to drive? Probably. Did you teach them to drink alcohol? Probably not. Did you teach them to smoke? There are things in life we do not teach our children, yet they find their way to it anyway. Put the responsibility where it lies! Next time she steps out in front of you, blow the horn! Her frightened face will give you the satisfaction you are searching for, and you wont have to do time for it! :) Plus! She will always remember that day and will forever think twice before doing it again

I think Officer Kingston would make a very good Chief of police, the council needs to put principals before personalities and appoint the right person who is qualified to do the job and not keep him out because some of them don't like him personally. Amon

The borough should hire from outside the police department.

I previously posted a comment about looking for a kitten in the area that needed a home..Im still looking, but i believe i left the wrong e-mail with the moderator... if anyone has, or knows someone who has kittens that need a home please post your information and i'll be happy to get a hold of you.

Happy St. Valentine's Day. May your heart be filled with love for all God's creatures.

I have lived in Ellwood City my whole life and can remember all the different thing there were to do back then. There was dances, movies, pool halls, and for those younger there was the old coffee shop,or even roller skating. Now all I hear is how the kids hanging out in front of stores down town and making buisness people angry. Well as I see it,if they (the kids) had a place to go in this town there would be less stuff for them to get into or to just get blamed for.

02/14/07 (12)
Re: all the 'kid crossing' posts-
What it comes down to is, the law is the law. Safety should be an issue. And the people who defend the arrogance of some students are sending a message that says kids, anyone, should be able to do just as they please.
Many years ago, a leader of a foreign country said, in essence, that 'they' didn't need to attack and destroy our country b/c we would do it to ourselves from within. It has been a slow process, but it's coming to pass.
Yeah, we have adults who break minor/major laws, and the public is quick to raise it's voice, and so it should be. But perish the thought that kids not have to learn rules/laws/respect also and exhibit that learning. We must learn to remember that 80% of todays parents have perfect children and are, themselves nigh unto perfect.
One poster mentioned the McD's light. People making right turns from 5th onto Fountain SHOULD be paying attention to the fact that for a period of time, the pedestrians DO have the walk light.
BUt I have yet to see a response from that 16 year olds Mom as to what the excuse is for the slow walking and holding up traffic during NICE weather.

02/14/07 (13)
Where did this talk of slots on 488 come from?

02/14/07 (14)
the big ole town of ellwood city shut down due to the snowstorm.

02/14/07 (15)
All of you who have commented on my original posting of rude children missed the general basis of my statement. Yes, there are laws that allow children to cross the street, and I don't mind when someone crosses against the light. It is when they cross against the light, or in the middle of the block, see you driving and slow their pace. Go ahead stand up for them, I understand, they are kids, they don't know any better. I have heard it all. Those excuses are ignorant. The ones who noticably slow their pace are RUDE. There is no other explanation. You say they are in a hurry. Then why slow down ones pace? Its arogant.

02/14/07 (16)
The best training you can get is Ellwood City Athletic Club. The owner Jeff Wiley is the best around. He is a professional in his business and he knows his stuff. He is very helpful and a very caring person. He has been in the business for a long time. If you want the right training by a professional see Jeff.

What is the big deal with Riverside using the stadium for home games? You act like the students of Lincoln are going to care. They won't. There is very little school spirit among the students of Lincoln. For example: The EC vs. Blackhawk basketball game, Yes there were many students at the game, but they were there to see Childs dunk. It was apparent that was their motive when he did dunk and the entire EC student section went crazy as if Ellwood had just won states, but no, they were being embarrassed by Blackhawk. There is no rivalry anymore.

02/14/07 (18)
Hey, "Einstein" that is good that you make a six figure income, we are all proud of you!! I do too. However, the majority of the people in this town do not!! There are alot of retired people in town on fixed income. Should they move out of their houses because their taxes go up to pay for teachers health insurance and pensions. I think it is pretty greedy to ask for free health care in this country when every other industry has to pay their own way!!! There is no reason they can't afford to pay a portion of their healthcare with the salaries that they are paid.

They should make part of student teaching working in corporate America for a year, then they would realize how nice they have it. Talk to a few teachers who worked in the corporate world before they were teachers "they understand!". Most of them wouldn't be caught dead in the faculty lounge, wining and crying over petty stuff, "they understand!."

Are there any haunted houses in or near the Ellwood area?

jockeymoore road has had ghosts since we were kids. chainman walks that road nearly every night after midnight. ""but dont stop your car in reach of his chain"" !!

02/14/07 (21)
intersections, the pedestrian has the right of way in the crosswalk, if you're in a vehicle and they are on foot , likely you will get to your destination long before they get to theirs and with a lot less effort, lighten up a little.

Ive overheard my kids talking about pictures on My Space, their words weren't in a flattering tone. I tried to remember all the names I had heard and when they were finished on the computer, I sat down and for the first time unblocked the security so I could check out what my kids were talking about. Anyone would be shocked to see what these kids are posting, but I believe their parents would be ashamed of their children. Just a warning, you can use your security to block these types of things, but you cannot do a thing when kids cut and paste it through the messengers.

I know exactly what you are talking about. It is scary. I have also seen some off the Instant Messages that kids send each other. OMGoodness.
Down right disgusting, nasty and cruel.

I think a little more parenting and common sense could go a long way.

02/14/07 (28)
I can't wait to go on a picnic with my girl up Moraine and just soak up the sun.

02/13/07 (01)
Riverside can just play the entire season on the road like EVERY OTHER school does when they go through a field renovation. Why do they need to use Ellwood's? It would be inconvenient to all of the Riverside students to make their way over town as well. Use some common sense, people.

More than a few parents would be shocked to see what their children post and send each other via the internet

Title 75 of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes contains the laws which govern the operation of vehicles on Pennsylvania roads.>>>> Section 3542. Right-of-way of pedestrians in crosswalks.
(a) General rule.—When traffic-control signals are not in place or not in operation, the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.

I nominate you as Corner Monitor, can I get a second? Dig out your junior officer sticker, along with your heaviest winter clothing, it's supposed to be cold tomorrow. I'll be sure to drive by and check on you. I'll be the one waving encouragement as I drive by.
Let me ask you this: Should there be an officer stationed at each block to arrest these against the light crossers?! How long would it be until you complained they were giving kids tickets for simply walking across the street when they could be out fighting crime?

RE:02/12/07 (21)I am not originally from Ellwood but I understand there are rivalries but these are also kids and families that work, shop, play in this area. They are basically your neighbors. I have met students from both schools and I know you people say that they are disrespectful but I have had wonderful experiences with both. When all the flooding happened a couple years ago, didn't most people contribute to aid people from both Riverside and Ellwood areas? Why not this? Let the rivalry stay between the school's team players and let the community stand up to help. Be adults here. Time to grow up and get over the rivalry.

Does anyone know what is going on with that development that was planned off of 488 in Perry Township? I think it was called "Whispering Winds" or something like that. All of the signs have been taken down.

Just another case against Walmart. When they couldn't get Cable's property, they tried Whispering Wind. The road can't hold up under the traffic

The slots are going in up there.

I HOPE YOU ARE REFERRING TO CABLES PROPERTY.
I think the slots would be a nice addition. I hope they put a red light in. That is a heck of a bad road. There have been probably 4 deaths in just that stretch of road. Mostly the deers fault.

YEAH FOR SLOTS.

In response to #7 on 2/7/07. What is your excuse for the kids walking out in front of cars in the summer? Are they in a hurry to get in an air conditioned house. Not all kids are guilty of this but the ones that constantly walk in front of vehicles have NO RESPECT for others let alone themselves. They should feel lucky that they aren't crossing streets in Florida or California because there would be alot DEADLY accidents. I can't believe how some parents can defend the actions of their children when they know that their child is to blame.

Just like the Geneva students crossing Rt 18. They NEVER look left or right and arrogantly assume that traffic will stop.

Why is Lincoln Park doing CATS when Lincoln high school already did it this year. I thought this school was this awesome, talented school
but they just do what everyone else is doing.

maybe their doing cats because they are  jealous of the fantastic job that ellwood did and they are out to prove they can do better but thats impossible.

Anybody here know of a good window blind and window treatment ?

I would like to know who makes the best

In response to your question, If you go to Home Depot or Lowe's they carry Bali and Graber--made by Springs Window Fashions. They are by far the best made and most reasonably priced. By the way, that reminds me of a joke.....

"A lady had just stepped out of the shower and someone knocked at her front door. She yelled, 'Who's there?' A friendly voice responded 'It's the blind man!' Figuring he could not see, she didn't bother to put on any clothes and opened her door. In amazement, he asked, 'Where do you want these blinds hung, ma'am???' "

Rep #11

First of all any good parent teaches their kids not to run across the street when the kids are little that is how more kids get hurt than anything.

Second you posted the law about right of ways for pedestrians then there are a lot of cars that break that rule every day at Fountain ave and 5 th street the walk signal is automatic it turns to walk when the traffic going north turns green yet cars pull into the crosswalk to make a right turn on red half of them don't slow down. other cars that want to turn tight onto fountain ave do the same thing and pull up to within a foot of people crossing the street. No I am not a child I am a parent of a child who doesn't drive and has crossed many times there always with the same results because people can't wait. People in cars do not give any pedestrians respect so before you complain about what the kids are doing look to what you do. The intersection at McDonalds is a an accident waiting to happen just remeber this when our students walk to and from school the school is responsible for anything that happens to them on the to or from school. What will happen if someone gets h!
it because people in cars are impatient? Everyone will end up paying for it because the parents will probably end up sueing the school district.

If it is such a problem with kids crossing the street might I suggest you go around behind the school down wayne ave and over to the overpass and avoid the kids at that time of day. There are other streets but only one way to the fifth street bridge from the school.

02/13/07 (20)

02/13/07 (22)
i have to add my $.02 on this subject. every day i see at least a doaen kids cross the intersectin at 5th and lawrence without waiting for the light to change. in most cases it is just a case of being in a hurry and not doing it to be rude, there are a few cases where it is done just to be rude and cause an inconvenience. one case that sticks in my mind was a teen girl crossing in front of me while i was coming down 5th from the school. if i would've had my eyes on anything else i probably would have hit her. she looked right at me while i was about 20 feet from her and she steps out in front of me and slows down and gives me a dirty look. this was a look of something like "ha ha, now you have to wait for the light", which i did at that point. it made me want to speed up and hit her to teach her a lesson.
these kids need to be taught respect and discipline. obviously they haven't been.

02/13/07 (23)
Its not that we don't care who will be the next chief, but more a case of what diffence does it make? if we have no say in it and they will appoint/hire whoever thay want. my concern is someone getting it that non-deserving, just because they have rank or seniority or the right last name. this department needs to be run a little more disciplined and controlled and they need to put someone in there that is going to do that.

I guess this is where I tell you how much I could care less! Isn't there another route you can take? It's Ellwood, you can be anywhere in a matter of minutes! Besides, I know how long it takes to cross the street and if you allow that tiny bit of time to upset you, then you probably need some counciling. Either that or there is something else in your life that you are seriously unhappy about and this small detention is where you choose to release that anger?. I don't know, but again I don't care. I was raised to respect my elders not yield to them.

02/13/07 (25)
the best place to go to for speed and agility classes is Sean Myers. His place has a huge upstairs and there is alot of room for the kids. Your child does not have to stand around waiting until it is his turn because of the room they have. Sean is also a great guy.

Why does you being at a Peebles in Salem mean the Ellwood City Store is going to close? For your information, Peebles businss in Ellwood Ciy has increased considerably since they opened. I don't think they have any intention of closing.

If you want to get conditioned for a sport, the best in the area is Jeff Smiley at the Ellwood City Athletic Club, 214 Line Avenue. He has speed and agility training classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week and if you join his classes I think he also includes the use of gym equipment in the fee. Jeff is the best motivator and has been training athletes for many years.

You say you would be doing the same thing but in the next breath, you use the word HURRY. On a beautiful 70' day, the attitudes, mannerisms and walk are the same. Go figure.

So, I guess since the intersection being discussed, and most major intersections in EC have traffic control signals, pedestrians, young and old, are to obey the signals. Period. If the above says they can saunter on out anytime W/O the signals, the opposite is true is true WITH signals. Ask a policeman to read all that has been written and see what he/she says!

Sometimes you have to be witness to things, not just takes what the kids say. Your child is probably a decent kid, but him or anyone else the right to tie up school buses and other traffic as they amble across the street as though they had paid ALL our taxes and owned the area. Let me tell you, once they make it across and are on the sidewalk agin, they become very animated, Go figure. I guess regardless the weather and temperature, Little Johnny needs to feel the power of control.

The slots are going in up there.

you people who arent teachers dont know what its like!
How would you like to play with kids all day, teach them abcs and 123s, then have to have three months off over the summer every year???
Isnt that horrible?

but they just do what everyone else is doing.

RE: 2/9/07 #1 - I'm glad you are not doing my taxes. If you force the teachers to pay for 1/2 of their insurance, you will have to offset the loss in pay with a pay raise. There would be no savings.

Let's face it, having the district pay 100% of their health insurance is a good employee benefit. When the mills were working, their employees received the same type of benefit package as well.

I too wish I had the same type of benefits. Don't take something good from the teachers just because you don't receive the same. Besides, if this is something you would like to have, go back to college and take courses which will enable you to become certified to teach and get a teaching job.

I agree. This year has been a real eye opener for me. More than a few parents would be shocked to see what their children post and send each other via the internet.

can't we just all get along?????? it's not about getting along - no one is trying to cause trouble. it's just when ellood was renovating their stadium - no one offered the use of their field to us - no - not even our neighbors - riverside. we can use their swimming pool - big deal! who swims? it's all about respect - of the game, the new coaching staff and of our football team. of course - the $$$ are talking to some of the board - but, next year or in the middle of the football season when our field is all torn up because of the added wear and tear of 2 more bands playing and a whole football game every week - do you really think our field is that good to handle all that play time? are our locker rooms/showers going to be taken care of? who will get kicked off the field? soccer, little wolverines, jv games, not riverside - it'll be our kids, your kids, ellwood kids! come on ellwood - call your board members and let them know your feelings. it's not can't we all!
get along! it's a home town rival and we bleed blue & white - not green & white - play the games away like we had to! there are other ways to make an effort to consolidate - not with a football field and a swimming pool -

It's so sad that the cost of insurance prevents many things from happening. Unfortunatly the price is paid by the child. Maybe if people weren't so quick with the "I'll sue you", things wouldn't be this way.
A sign of the times I guess.

If the posts on this forum are a true reflection of Ellwood City community than there is no doubt why this community is not blessed or moving forward. The selfish attitudes and "who are they" attitudes will never be rewarded. I have realized in my life unless you having a giving heart you will never reap any benefits. Maybe you do not want to share your "precious stadium" but, what if it was the other way around. I can't take another day in grumpville. We should be willing to share our blessings with others and hope for the best. I am ashamed to say I live in Ellwood City. I really am.

Why do our local school teachers "REFUSE" to pay "ANYTHING" for their health insurance??!! I have a Bachelors Degree and I have to pay for my health insurance every month! Think about how many more books and computers we could buy if our teachers would pay for just "HALF" of their insurance premiums.

02/09/07 (02)
After careful consideration the Ellwood City Girls Softball league felt it necessary to increase the registration fee an additional $10.00 to offset the increased cost of insurance, { which is now over $3,000 a year ), umpires fees, electric and water bills, and all the other little things that have gone up in price. The cost for a second child will remain the same at $25.00 and a third child or more at $10.00 each. We have also reduced the number of fund raising calenders to be sold from four to three. It is the first increase in 10 years and we still remain the lowest cost in all of the Lawrence county programs. In addition to the costs mentioned above, the fee of $50.00 dollars also provides funds for the girls uniforms, visors for the t ball and instructional leagues, participation awards, trophies, softballs( approx. one per player ) grass cutting and field maintainance materials, etc. We also have a picnic at the end of the season for the players and thier families, w!
here we serve chicken, hot dogs, potato salad, chips, beverages , and alot of door prizes. The Little Angels field is envied by alot of other programs and we are very lucky to have a great group of people who run this organization and work very hard all summer to maintain and constantly improve our facility so that our children have a safe and enjoyable summer of playing ball. Ellwood is being very generous for submitting the offer to help riverside while their stadium is getting redone. There are pluses for both sides, for example, riverside could use their football field, while Ellwood uses Riversides' pool.

We weren't allowed to wear slacks, it had to be dresses or skirts - we didn't have insulated boots, just the rubber ones that came up to mid-calf - let me tell you, our legs would bleed from the cold going across the 5th Street Bridge when the tops of our boots rubbed against our legs.

** I can relate to what you are saying, however, my mother was smart enough to make us wear long pants under our dress or skirt. Once we got to school we would take them off along with the boots we wore. I was raised in the country and my father would take me to school on the back of his horse! I was probably 1 of 3 or 4 kids that made it that day, but I went regardless. Those were the days when snow would fall 2 or 3 feet during the night. You can't tell me times haven't change.

02/09/07 (06)
To 02/08/07 (02):
I agree with you 200%!! Scheduling events would be a MESS. The newspaper said that Helling Stadium holds about 60 events a year. Riverside probably averages out to about the same amount. So you figure around 120 events a year for a high school stadium??? Are they just talking about holding strictly football games there? Or do they want to hold all their events there? I doubt the Riverside kids want to play at Lincoln's field and I doubt Lincoln kids want Riverside to play at THEIR field. Yes, most of you will say that the kids' opinions don't matter, but they do. Do you realize how strong of a rivalry EC vs. RHS is? I can see much vandalism and fighting in the future of Helling Stadium if this goes through...

02/09/07 (07)
DO I think crossing Lawrence Ave. heading north means they are headed to buy drugs and cigarettes? NO!!! They are most likely headed to McD's then home.
**Okay you are in your warm car, they are in the VERY cold weather, does it hurt you to give them the right away? NO! Maybe you should try walking to and from work in this cold weather and see if you change your attitude!

Am I gonna ask them WHY they are crossing and smiling and waving when the light has turned green for east west traffic and they are holding up traffic? Are you out of your mind!?!?!
**So what! So what a kid thinks its funny to watch you loose your mind over a few extra seconds at a green light. If it's that bad, blow your horn and wave back.

With regard to your second paragraph, I don't disagree with what you have said. But I DO know that your suggestion had been tried with a number of the DISRESPECTFUL kids on Lawrence Ave. after hours. You know, the ones who sit on the benches or hang out in doorways and give people a hard time!?!?

The 'crossing the street' thing is a safety issue. It's one that you, as a parent, should be concerned about. These slow walking kids who choose to step out knowingly against the light are daring people to get upset, and you know that!
**Its cold outside! All I can say to your comment is: If I were in that same situation, I would probably do the same thing. I think human nature would be telling me to hurry and find heat. My children ride the elementary school bus, they have to walk two blocks to our home and I know how cold they are when they get home so I can't even imagine what the high school kids feel like. I don't want to argue with you, I'm just trying to help you see that not everyone in this world is out to make you wait through a green light, some of them are just trying to get home to a warm house.

ok - just heard that our school board is considering or already has offered our football stadium to riverside. what??? do you really think they are going to take care of our locker rooms, our facilities? Our field by the mid season is torn up at center field - can you really afford this??? or are you getting $$$$$. how about the concession stands, boosters, conflict of schedules, but you think our field can handle it - our speaker system, our bleachers that need painted so badly, what about our football players and their schedules - our new coaches, feeding the boys on thursday night - where was riverside when our field was being built. come on - think of EVERYTHING FIRST. CAN YOU HANDLE IT - AND HOW MUCH OF A STRAIN ON THE DIFFERENT BOOSTERS???

Well the cost is up $10 this year. Why does it now cost $50 for Ellwood City girls softball league? Also, you have to sell 4 mandatory fund raisers calendars. Who wants to buy those @ $15 a piece. The cost to have your child participate in activites is ridiculous. No wonder why there are so many kids in trouble. Who can afford to keep up with sports and activities year round. Football/Cheering/Soccer/Softball/Baseball/Baskt-ball etc. I'm going to need a second job soon to pay for all this.

But sometimes, more often than not anymore, people are just plain cruel. "Back in the day" people were cruel, yes, but nothing like this!

02/08/07 (09)
I tried to let this pass buy, but just had to comment on the kids dressing for the cold weather. I lived in North Side, during the 40's, walked to and from high school four times a day - a mile each way. And, there was snow on the ground from October until April many, many years. The only kids who got bussed were the ones from Frico, Wurtemburg, etc.(the outlying areas), and we lived thru it. Kids today don't know how lucky they are.

02/08/07 (10)
I think the idea to use Helling Stadium for Riverside Football is a mistake. Helling stadium is for the Blue & White, not the green & white. Where were the loyal Riverside directors when we were remodeling Helling Stadium. Have them play on the road like everyone else does when a stadium is being built or renovated.

Sorry I did not state clearly about the Perry 1 and Perry 2. They are all Perry. It is just that the meetings are held in Perry 2. You in Perry 1 have the same supervisors that are the supervisors in Perry 2.

It seems strange that the 2 Perrys are divided by Wayne Township but I guess it has somthing to do with the way the river curves. Seems stupiud to me but what is my opinion worth.

John Zias lives in Perry 1 and the other 2 supervisors, Dori McElwain and Guy Geisler live in Perry 2. All the same Township, the same road crew, the same secretary (Stacey), the same tax base and the same laws.

Just remember the meeting.

February 13 at 7 pm at the Perry 2 building. You all need to know where your tax dollars go and to meet your supervisors.

Concerning this comment from the 16 year old's mother:
02/07/07 (13)What kind of respect to you give these kids? When they are walking across the street in front of your car, do you know why? Have you ever bothered to ask them why?\\\\\

I didn't write the comment to which you are respoding but here is MY input: Do I know why they are doing the above? In my case, yes. They are leaving school. DO I think crossing Lawrence Ave. heading north means they are headed to buy drugs and cigarettes? NO!!! They are most likely headed to McD's then home.

Am I gonna ask them WHY they are crossing and smiling and waving when the light has turned green for east west traffic and they are holding up traffic? Are you out of your mind!?!?!

Not every moving vehicle can stop on a dime. But you know also, it will be the kid that steps out in FRONT of a moving vehicle that won't be held accountable and some poor driving 'joe' will pay dearly. While I will feel compassion for the teen, if the teen did it just to be 'smart', I will probably feel a little worse for the driver!

To #12 on 02/05/07: Wow! Very well put! I'm sure there will be some naysayers as there always are on this forum, but you pretty much summed it up. This town is stagnant, if not dying. Our political leaders need to completely rethink their strategies of running this town. Too much time is spent looking backwards instead of looking at the future. What will Ellwood City look like in 2025? The mental picture I get is a very bleak one.

RE: 02/06 #3 - Sweats won't do it either. It will take insulated long underwear. Been there and have done that.

You have to dress for the weather even if it's not the "cool" thing to do. It's the prudent thing to do!

I was also a walker and we had to dress for the weather. I was fortunate as I only had to go two blocks to get to school. Kids that had greater distances either dressed for the weather and walked or a parent brought them. You have to use good judgement when it is so cold.

Call hartman elementary at 724-758-3241. They will be able to tell you what you need they will also mail you a packet of information that will need to be filled out. Yes your child goes because they check hearing and vision and get to see the classroom too. Also if you know someone who has kids in hartman already they usually send home a paper with each student to be given to someone who has a child going into kindergarten. hope this helps.

Although the Winters today are, on average, about 10 degrees cooler, the summers are, on average, a few degrees warmer than they were 20+ years ago. These warm temperatures stay around for a much longer time than they have in the past. Remember Thanksgiving last year? One could have played a game of golf during that time. Years ago, snow would have encumbered the snow belts, like us, and golf would most definitely not be an option during that time. Yes, global warming will affect our Earth, and it has already begun, HOWEVER, it is happening at such a slow speed, none of us will experience the "true" effects. I do not agree with most in stating that we are the main cause. To an extent, yes, we are, with our CFC's (chlorofluorocarbons) and vehicles, but think about it, it is just the cycle of the Earth. Hundreds of millions of years ago, when the dinosaurs ruled the Earth, temperatures were twice as high as they are now..then, the ice age. There were no CFC's, vehicles, or people then, and it still happened. Perhaps we are just beginning to reach the point of the Earth's cycle where it will begin to get hot again.

What kind of respect to you give these kids? When they are walking across the street in front of your car, do you know why? Have you ever bothered to ask them why? You probably assume they are going to buy cigeretts or just doing it to annoy you. That is a form of disrespect as well.
Kids, like adults have emotions, but their emotions aka hormones are moving a lot faster, causing them to react before properly thinking. Their lives move much faster than ours did, and the temptations are closer to them than they were to us. As adults we need to remember this, and instead of crying "oh they have no respect anymore" try to find what is happening to cause this and help find a solution. Sure some kids are unreachable, but you would be surprised how many would just love even a moment of positive attention, and how much of a difference it would make in their, and your lives.

Football and baseball aren't the only things to do in ellwood. re: And despite all that I have written so far, Ellwood does offer much in regard to a commuting base for Pittsburgh. It does have a viable clean downtown. Housing is ridiculously cheap in comparison to the Pittsburgh suburbs. The town is still a safe place to live, despite "the drug problem". The tax structure is 1/2 to 1/4 of anywhere in Allegheny county. The schools do have a good academic reputation. And the people are really and truly a friendly lot. But with no economic base, or such limited access to the Pittsburgh "corridor", then why would anyone move here?

You deserve respect. You have said exactly what we have tried to since we got here and we are on the way out. Thank you. I am so glad someone from here can admit the truth. It is sad. I pray change will come, but we do not have the time to sit and find out.

I have a question for the aspiring meteorologist:

Then how do you explain "global warming"? Apparently your research contradicts what the environmentalist wackos are trying to brain wash our kids into believing. And yes, I do remember having more snow, more often when I was young (20+ years ago) versus the amount of accumulating snow we have now.

I don't blame the kids for not wanting to wait outside for the bus. The real issue, in my opinion, is the walkers. Ellwood has a lot of kids that walk to and from school and maybe not everyone would be able to get a ride. If my child was a walker and couldn't get a ride on days like today, I would let him stay home.

I would never reveal the name of the church....it's NOT relevant...AND there are still a few people there who I care about.
Thank you to those who invited me to their church, it was interesting....invitations as opposed to"NOW WHICH CHURCH AS THAT?" Either someone is feeling mightly guilty or wants to start some gossip. What else is new?

well a church is supposed to a place were u here the gospel and nothing else, no church should be ashamed of that if you did not like what you heard then there is nothing wrong with some one asking which church thats how these churches and preachers get away with this and even worse because no one wants to hold them accountable if you know people at that church and they would be ashamned well then i would not go to church that i was ashamed of

I, for one, like groundhogs. I think they are cute and they do not bother anyone. Your blatant disrespect of an innocent animal is uncalled for.

The elementary has its share of people who use intimidation and fear and screaming to control the students. You would be surprised at what goes on.

May God bless and be with THE ZIMMERMAN FAMILY at this hard time.

02/06/07 (17)
My point is proven...I refused to mention the name of the church because they are some of the people there I care deeply about....and everyone on this sound-off board is tripping over one another to find out which church it is. Just so they can start gossip. It not God's house that had the problem, it is the people in it. BTW, I went back recently, and nothing has changed.......Never again.

Groundhog Day

Old Groundhog stretched in his leafy bed.
He turned over slowly and then he said,
"I wonder if spring is on the way,
I'll go and check the weather today.
If I see my shadow between eleven and noon,
I then will know that I'm out too soon.
I'll crawl back in bed for six weeks more,
Pull up the warm covers and snore and snore.
But if no shadow gives me a scare,
I know that spring is in the air,
I'll wake my friends and wish them cheer,
With glorious news that spring is here."

How can you blame a team's losses on the coach when the players missed about 60 percent of the free throws and mishandled the ball just about every game? I only missed 2 games this season and saw this over and over again. These are facts, look at the stats. Also, why can a player bash a coach on this site, but comments about players, not even mentioning names, not get printed? I will state the facts again...it is hard to coach a successful team when your starters are not consistently eligable to play every game.

Does anyone know when sign ups are for boys baseball for ellwayne team in ellport or for ellwood?

It's extremely sad in the great (at least used to be) little down of Ellwood City, that when someone says something that another does not like....they are accused of being on drugs! And a drug that is useful in many ways to help people. I know people who are on Zoloft, because they NEED help, and that is what this drug does. Helps them to feel better. You who accuse....same on you. Thank you to those who made comments defending the poster who brought up the thought and was late accused. There are decent people, understanding people in the world. Those of you who have prescibed Zoloft...don't let these people get you down....

You are wrong. Winters were not "worse" in your day than they are now. I, an aspiring meteorologist (Weatherman), researched this a little bit. It is a commmon misunderstaning in adults to think that the winters were worse when they were young. This, my friends, is indeed a falsification. Snow accumulation was, on average, higher than it is now. Temperatures, however, were, on average, warmer 20+ years ago. It was not AS common to have windchills below 0 degrees as it is now, however it did occasionally happen. The kids in today's winters are actually braving about an average of 10 degree cooler temperatures than they did in "your day". Don't bash the kids for complaining about the cold. I agree with them that it is not right to have kids stand outside in -4 degree temperatures and wait for the bus, or walk to school in those kinds of conditions. Kids are definitely more pampered than they use to be, but TIMES ARE CHANGING. Life in general is getting easier for ALL of us. Don't try to deny that you are not more pampered than you were as a child. One of America's greatest goals is to make life easier for us and for our posterity. Trust me, if you were a teenager, you would be complaining about it too.

I, for one, am glad to learn that the EC Varsity Boys Basketball Coach is resigning. I'm sure that coaching probably isn't the easiest thing to do in the world, and I admire people willing to devote their free time to the kids in our community, but comments that he has made, both in the paper and to some of the players are not necessary.

Many of today's children are rude and disrespectful. You see disrespect in everything they do; from slowing down their stride as they cross the street and a car is coming, to talking inappropriately in public facilities such as restaurants, and how they act during things such as sporting events. People need to start making examples of these disrespectful displays. One that comes to mind is a recent outburst of profanity to a group of coaches during a sporting event full of people of all ages. One of the problems is that many of the parents of these disrespectful children feel their kids do nothing wrong, and stand up for them instead of disciplining them. I know when I was a child if an adult said I did something wrong, my parents were going to listen to what the adult had to say, and if it sounded logical I was going to be punished. People need to start doing things about the disrespect. If something isn't done acts of disrespect will only continue to get!
worse. Ban a child from all sports for the year. Show these kids that there will be consequences for their actions. After a while things will be back to how they were. If you think banning the student from all sports for the rest of the year is harsh, or will hurt their chance to possibly play a sport in college here is the truth. These acts of disrespect has already hurt their chances to play a sport in college because colleges see these acts as a liability, and they can find hundreds of other players just as good or better that don't act like children.

Congratulations to Officer McBride for being the chosen K-9 Police Dog Officer/Handler!!

May we wish him the best that he and the K-9 dog will be appreciated to the fullest for all the services they may provide when and where they are needed. Officer McBride has proven himself to be very reliable since he began his career here in Ellwood City.

As a community, we will probably need to give the Officer and the K-9 dog time to settle in together and to form a routine that will enable them to perform at their best. Once all is settled for both of them, I'm sure we; as a community, will see a great difference in many areas of crime.

The idea of kids in schools getting to know the K-9 dog is a wonderful way to show them we need to respect animals and to respect what they can do FOR us, even if certain people may prefer the dog is not capable. All kids of all ages need to know drugs are horrible for them, and what better way than to have a dog "show them" that 'they can smell out a bad person'! Also, kids need to know a Police Officer can be a great friend or ally in any time of need...they protect and serve our kids too. Kids shouldn't be taught at any age to fear any Officer. We only fear an Officer if we have done wrong or are doing wrong, correct?

Yet, they are always there if we need them....

All the best wishes to you, Officer McBride. Thank you for having the confidence to apply for the position, and for being courageously willing to step up to an new and unfamiliar plate - one that I'm sure will be very challenging. I have no doubt that there will be trying times for you, but I believe you will succeed.

Always remember one thing Officer: If I'm not mistaken, your K-9 dog will cherish you for who you are when you wake up in the mornings AND when you both go home after a hard and long shift - no matter what kind of harsh words anyone may have said to you during that shift, right?

I hope the community will appreciate you while cherishing the K-9 dog as well! I also hope the people who have done wrong and are doing wrong are just a bit nervous of what's yet to come - they should be, or they shouldn't be living in our community in the first place.

Hopefully when we all finally see you and the K-9 Unit car riding around in the community, it'll be so much said and greatly appreciated relief for most of us....

Thank you to all of those who made this K-9 Unit become possible!!

Again - thank you Officer McBride!

Bless you,
- JR -

What ever happened to the guy that was looking for cupid to shoot his girlfriend with that LOVE arrow? Did it work ? Did the begging get her back? Or did you let her go ?

The following is part of an email I wrote in response to a question my brother had asked me about a news story (which I did not read) about a "drug problem" in Ellwood City. He lives in Connecticut and has been out of Ellwood since the early 60's.

As a child of the 70's in Ellwood, the only drug problem I recall was our inability to get it. Sure, there was pot, some cocaine( I never used it, but I sure did like the smell of it! ), and even to a lesser degree, acid and pills. Please remember, I haven't even SEEN pot since the 1980's, so I am far from the "in crowd" in the drug scene. I do however lurk the pages of Elllwoodcity.org, as you should, and I read constant laments over the drug problem in and around town. Any discussions I have had with people that would know, seem to point to the everpresent pot, but it seems that crystal meth has made a big splash. It's amazing what a little Cairitin D and some gasoline antifreeze can do. I understand it to be as addictive as crack, dirt cheap, and readily available. I also understand that it just tears you up. We've all seen the Dateline specials on it I'm sure.

People on the forum keep screaming about the drug houses and the Police Department's lack of concern and action. I'm not sure of just what a "problem" it all is. I am sure that any activity is a concern, but it's not like when I lived in DC with the visible crack houses on every block in SE. But, I am sure there is an issue when you remember that Ellwood only has a population of about 6500 now, and probably 60-70% of that is over the age of 60. That would leave the impression that all the kids are hopped up, but I think we have to keep it in perspective.

Also, don't lose sight of the socioeconomic situation here in EC, you can't point to West End and easily envision Cos Cob. Perry Twp. isn't exactly "rural" Greenwich. Ellwood City is poor and unemployed, or at best underemployed. Teenagers on the forums are relentless on their pleadings for the powers that be introduce "something to do" in Ellwood. Remember, there are no Benjamin's, no PeeWees, no Manos or Majestics to go to. The SOI and the Moose and Elks do not have dances for kids as they did when I was in school. There is just NOTHING here for the youth. And believe me, nothing sells drugs like boredom. If you do not play football or baseball in this town, I have no idea how these kids would occupy their time. And when economics come into play, that just aggravates the issue.

At least when I was "coming up", we all worked SOMEWHERE. We always had a few bucks to go to Pittsburgh to watch a game, go to a concert. ( I saw Led Zepplin for $12 ), or hit a nightspot. Now, the kids have to have $4-5000 just to buy a piece of crap car, then fill up a tank of gas for $30, drive into Pittsburgh, pay $15 to park somewhere and go to a club to buy a beer for $6, or a mixed drink for $8-$10. The last concert I thought of attending in Pittsburgh was an Elton John/Billy Joel show that had a ticket price of $300. A Hockey game costs AT LEAST $30+ a ticket for peanut heaven. Even a Pirate game is going to cost you a minimum of $40 for 2 tickets and parking. The Steelers? That's laughable. I have the money and have only been able to go to one game in 6 years. And that was $58 a ticket for a seat slightly lower than the geosynchrono
