Riverside Takes Advantage Of 6 Errors, And Advances
To The Semi-Finals
May 21, 2008
The Riverside Panthers traveled to California
University of Pennsylvania's Lilly Field to take on Greensburgh Central
Catholic Tuesday night, for some WPIAL quarter-final action. The Panther
(17-1) rattled Greensburgh Central Catholic early, as the leadoff batter
Leah Prisuta reached on four straight balls and was followed by a rocket
double into left-center field by Chelsea Evens. Prisute and Evens would come
around to score on hits by Stefanie Kaiser, and winning pitcher Kari Falk.
Prisuta was at it again in the fourth and sixth as she started two more
rallies reaching on errors by the short-stop, and would find herself
crossing the plate on a bobbled bunt down the third baseline, sealing the
deal for the panthers 8-2. Kari Falk recorded
the victory
for Riverside with a complete game striking out six of the final 12 batters.
The Panthers advance to the semi-finals where they will match-up against
Washington(19-3) today at 3 p.m. at Fairhaven Park in Kennedy Township.
Extra Innings Needed,
as Ciera Damon Comes Up Big For The Wolverines
May 20, 2008
The
Ellwood City softball team played their first playoff game Monday night
against Chartiers Valley, and extra innings would be needed to determine who
would be moving onto the the semi-finals. Ellwood fell behind 2-0 in the
first and trailed the colts 4-3 the entire game as they headed into the
seventh inning. The wolverines found themselves two outs away from their
season being over, until Ciera Damon's deep drive cleared the center field
fence, tying the game at 4's and forcing extra innings. In the bottom of the
ninth junior Kaycee Bradosky reached base with a infield single and advanced
into scoring position on a wild pitch, and with a runner in scoring position
Damon stepped to the plate once more. Ciera "Clutch" Damon delivered a RBI
line drive to center field that fell just out-of-reach of a diving center
fielder, and sent the Wolverines into the semi-finals with a 5-4 win over
Chartiers Valley. The girls advance to the semi-finals to face Elizabeth
Forward. Katelyn Yoho recorded the victory for the Wolverines, pitching a
complete game, with 4 strike-outs and no walks.
Wet & Wild One, as Panthers Advance to
Second Round
May 15, 2008
With a 25 min rain delay and a steady cold
rain falling the Riverside girls took the field to open the first round of
the WPIAL Playoffs against Burrell. The girls took advantage of some early
Burrell mistakes, as Burrell's starting pitcher was called for four illegal
pitches which advanced the Panthers one base at a time around to score in
the first inning. Working with a led is something Riversides ace Kari Falk
is used to doing, but throwing a wet ball was something she was worried
about. She handled the weather perfectly and threw 5 1/3 innings of no-hit
ball, recording seven innings pitched with 6 strike-outs and 4 walks. Falk
help her pitching cause with a RBI single in the third to extend the
Panthers led to 2-0, and she was followed by Chelsea Evens who reached base
on a walk and stole around to take home a wild pitch getting the Panthers a
3-0 led heading into the seventh. Burrell went down swinging and added a run
in the last inning, but it was to little to late for them as the Panthers
(16-1) move on the face Greensburg Central Catholic on
Monday at a site and time to be determined.
Here Comes Riverside - Panthers Advance into First
Round
May 14, 2008
Senior Catcher Nico Baldelli, nearly watched
his high school baseball career end as he fouled a ball high into the air
with South Fayette's second baseman Lane Ramage tracking it down. "Where did
it go" was probably running through Ramage head about the time the high fly
ball landed in foul territory right beside him, because he lost sight of it
and Baldelli had new life at the plate. Nico made South Fayette pay for
their mistakes as with the next swing of the bat the Panthers would be up
3-2 and heading into the bottom of the seventh. Riverside fell behind early
and trialed heading in to seventh 1-3 and got the spark they need courtesy
of left fielder Zach Gallaher who roped an in-field single and got the
Panthers rolling with two outs in the seventh. Gallaher was followed by Ryan
Finnegan who drew a five-pitch walk, and was follwed to the plate by
Baldelli. After Baldelli's near pop-out he smashed a two-run double down the
right-field line scoring the boys aboard. Starting pitched Justin McCanna
finished out South Fayette in the bottom and seal the deal for the Panthers
sending them into Thursdays 4 p.m. first round playoff match-up against
Beaver @ Chippewa Park.
Just a note - The Riverside Panthers Varsity Football team squared
off against Beaver in the first round of the WPIAL Football PLayoffs this
season, and knocked Beaver out of the playoffs.
32-Game Section Win Streak Snapped By New Castle,
2-0
May7,
2008
Katelyn
Yoho, Sara Falotico, Becca Blyth, Ciera damon, Lindsey Scialdone, and Mary
Maine were all honored as part of senior night before the Wolverines section
finale last night a Stiefel park. The girls, who are already section champs
were riding a undefeated season and a 32-game section win streak, which
would all come to an end as New Castle would jump out to a 2-0 led on some
Ellwood City errors and that's all they needed to seal the victory.
Yoho pitched three shut out innings as she headed into the fourth all tied
up at 0-0, the New Castle leadoff batter in the fourth reached on a single,
followed by the next batter reaching on a error, and the next girl walking
to load the bases. With the bags loaded the leadoff batter would eventually
score on a Wolverine error, and next girl would steal home on a
dropped ball for the second Hurricane run, which would turn out to be the
winning run.
The Wolverines never stopped fighting, but every ball seemed to be hit
directly at the New Castle players and the Wolverines left a lot of girls on
in scoring positions. "We played a very good game, but there was nothing we
could do. I mean, we hit the ball, but it went straight to them. We'll get
them next time. We'll get them in playoffs." - Sara Falotico. Yoho
took a tough-loss as she throw a complete game recording 13 strike-outs with
only 1 walk. Kaycee Bradosky went 3-for-3 leading the Wolverines in their
losing efforts. The Lincoln High School girls finished the regular season at
16-1 overall and 14-1 in Section 1-AAA. Next for the girls is the WPIAL
Playoffs.....(view senior

Riverside Dedicates For a Fallen Teammate, and
Blows-Out Wolverines 15-4
April 30, 2008
Every
player in a white and green pin-striped uniform took the field Tuesday
afternoon with the number 7 or the letter S painted on their face, as they
where dedicating this game to Shane Rusnock, a teammate who was injured in a
automobile accident Monday. With "S" fueling Riverside, the
Panthers blanked the Wolverines 1-2-3 in the first and then unleashed a
powerful offence that put the Wolverines in a deep hole, fast. Riverside
sent 12 men to the plate in the first to face Ellwood City's ace Ross McDevitt, and the Panthers pounced all over the Wolverines forcing 5 errors
and opening up a 8-0 lead. The Wolverines would slowly chip away at the
Panthers lead inning by inning, as
Stephen
Johns homered in the second but it was not enough to knock the Panthers off
their scoring train. 4 Panthers smashed long-balls during their 15-4 outing
against Ellwood City. Nico Baldelli kicked-off the home-run-derby with a
three-run rocket shot in the first which was followed with two-run blast off
the bat of Nick Wisor. Riverside kept the heat on in the third when starting
pitcher Justin McCanna went down-town with a man aboard, and was followed up
by a Coulton Bunney blast over the right-field fence to extend the Panthers
lead to 12-2. McCanna was at it again in the fourth as he ripped a double
into the right-center gap clearing the bases and enforcing the mercy rule on
the Wolverines. The Panthers (11-3, 8-1 in Section 5-AA) next travel to
Notrona Heights for a non-section match-up today at 4. Ellwood City (3-12,
2-6 in Section 5-AA) nest host Shenango today at 4.
Three Runs-On One Swing
April 28, 2008
The
Ellwood City Varsity softball team hosted West Allegheny Saturday afternoon
in a non-section match up. The Wolverines sent senior second baseman Becca
Blyth, to the plate in the bottom of the first with two outs and two on, and
with one swing Becca would seal the deal for the Wolverines. Blyth's
three-run jack brought around Ciera Damon after she walked, and Katelyn Yoho
who singled into left field, giving Ellwood City a 3-0 led and the victory.
After jumping out to the three run lead, Yoho took control of the game from
the mound pitching a three hit shut-out, while recording 12 strikeouts with
only one walk.
"They're another AAA team from another section that gave us some good
competition. From here on in, every game gets us ready for playoffs. There's
a lot of things we have to work on and improve. We play Sto-Rox on Monday,
they're a great team and we're just going to treat every game as a playoff
game from here on in." said Gary Rozanski, EC softball coach.
The Girls (14-0, 12-0 in Section 1-AAA) next travel to Sto-Rox for a
non-section game at 4 p.m. Monday evening....(View

Section 1-AAA CHAMPIONS!!
April 25, 2008
The Ellwood City Wolverines clinched the
Section 1-AAA title Thursday evening, by not only beating the Hopewell
Vikings 6-0 but shutting them out in the process. It was back to the Katelyn
Yoho show Thursday at Stiefel Park, as she hurled a complete 7 inning game
recording 7 strike-outs and allowing only two hits. Not only was Yoho
getting it done on the mound she sparked the Wolverine offence, as she
provided the first three Ellwood City runs with a two run single in the
opening frame and a follow up solo home-run in the third. Ellwood City's
leadoff hitter Sara Falotico, recorded to hits for the blue and white, while
teammate Ciera Damon hit a two-run homer in the sixth sealing the deal for
the Wolverines. The Section 1-AAA Champs (13-0, 12-0) next host West
Allegheny Saturday at noon.
bitter, but
could get no closer as Riverside held onto victory. Panther Shane Rusnock led the way for Riverside going 2-for-4 at the dish while Nick Wisor
picked up the victory. Riverside baseball (8-3, 6-1 Section 5-AA)
travels to Summit Academy on Wednesday.
10-Hits-10-Runs, For the Ellwood City Girls
April 23, 2008
The
Ellwood City softball team improved their record to (12-0, 11-0 in Section
1-AAA) as Katelyn Yoho throws another three-hit shut-out against Ambridge
Tuesday evening. Yoho pitched a complete game with 5 innings of work
recording 6 strike-outs an no walks. The Wolverines wasted no time putting

to a 10-0 victory over Ambridge. The girls next hosts Hopewell Thursday at 4
p.m.
Riverside Softball Follows EC Lead, Wins In Last
At-Bats
April 22, 2008
Not even two days have passed since Ellwood
City's last inning heroics and Riverside has pulled off some last minute
heroics of its own. Panther Chelsea Evans drove in her second run of
the game, a game-winning RBI single, to lift Riverside to a 2-1 victory over
Seneca Valley Monday afternoon. Seneca Valley tied the game at one in
the top half of the seventh with the aid of three Panther fielding miscues,
but the tie game was short lived. A lead off walk and
station-to-station softball put Panther Charly Fox on third for Evans who
drove her home for the walk off victory. Riverside junior Kari Falk
struck out six batters in seven inning to gain the victory. Riverside
softball (10-1, 7-0 Section 5-AA) hosts Alliquippa Tuesday at 4:00pm.
Riverside Baseball Holds onto Victory
April 22, 2008
Sometimes looking forward to a 10-run mercy
rule can be a bad thing. The Riverside Panthers held 10-1 lead at one
point in Monday afternoon baseball tilt against the Beaver Falls Tigers,
easily able to cut the game short by mercy rule by tacking on more run in
its half of the fifth inning. Fortunately for the Tigers the Panthers
didn't score their eleventh run to force the mercy and almost unfortunately
for the Panthers, the Tigers stormed back to make it a 10-9 nail
Undefeated Season Rolls on for Wolverine Softball
April 21, 2008
Kaycee Bradosky drove in Jenna Ricutti in the
bottom half of the seventh inning with a walk off single, knocking off the
Knights 3-2 Saturday afternoon and pushed the Wolverine season mark to 11-0.
Katelyn Yoho struck out 14 Knock (9-2) batters and yielded only three hits,
but let up a game tying homerun in the top half of the seventh inning.
"I'm glad they had to face a little adversity in this game. I think
it's a good preparation for the playoffs and it was a really good test.
It was a good, close game and we had to fight and take the victory," Ellwood
Coach Steve Santillo said. And take the victory the Wolverines did.
In the bottom half of the inning, Riciutti reached on an error, Sara
Falotico walked pushing the winning run into scoring position. The
rest was left up to Bradosky who deposited a game winning single to push the
Wolverines to victory.
"We needed a game like this against an amazing
team and we'll probably face them in the playoffs. It boosted our
confidence if we could beat a team like Knock," Ellwood's Becca Blyth said.

Strong Pitching by Carrick Senior shuts down
Wolverines on Senior Night
April 21, 2008
In typical Senior Night fashion, all
Wolverines seniors got a piece of playing time. In not so typical fashion,
the Wolverines committed seven errors and yield 10 walks to a Carrick ball
club that has now won seven straight contest. Carrick defeated the
Wolverines 12-2 Saturday night behind the strong arm of senior Ted Fricke
who struck out 16 Ellwood City batters in route to a three hit complete
game. Ellwood City (2-12) was led by Trey McKim who smashed a double
and scored both runs for the Wolverines. It may have been the twelve defeat
for Ellwood, but Coach Erik Montozzi took it as a chance to get his senior
playing time and round the corner into the second half of the season. "We
have ten seniors and we got them all in and they played hard. They may have
ended up on the wrong end tonight but this team has a lot of heart and they
don't ever give up," Coach Montozzi said. "We're at the half way point of
the season and we're going to keep plugging away and see what the next half
of the season gives us. We'll make some changes, keep practicing, and just
keep moving in a positive direction for the next half of the season,"
Montozzi added. (view

in forcing the 10-run mercy rule. Nico Baldelli matched Finnegan with three

Panthers. Riverside baseball (7-5, 5-1 Section 5-AA) hosts Beaver Falls in
section play on Monday. (view

A Late Surge From Mohawk, Goes Unanswered as The
Panthers Fall 5-12
April 17,2008
The Mohawk Warriors sent nine batters to the
plate in fifth and sixth inning and came away with 9 runs, as the Riverside
Panthers had no answer for that offensive explosion, falling to the Warriors
12-5. The Panthers opened up the scoring in the first when staring pitcher
Justin McCanna ripped a RBI single allowing Bud Main to come around and put
the Panthers up 1-0. Not done yet, Riverside was at it again in the second
when Coulton Bunney's RBI single brought home Justin King who reached on a
Mohawk error to extend there early led to 2-0. Mohawk would break the ice in
the third with a few well placed hits and a deep sacrifices fly, to take the
led 3-2. The led would flip flop back-an-forth until Mohawk's outburst of
runs in the fifth and sixth that just put the icing on the Panthers. For the
Panthers McCanna went 5 innings with 3 strike-outs and 5 walks, as Nico
Baldelli and McCanna led the offensive attack with to RBI's apiece. The
Riverside Panthers (6-2, 5-0 in Section 5-AA) next host Center in a non
section game Friday at 4:00 p.m.

two hits and two RBI's apiece, while Lindsey Scialdone had a pair of singles
with a RBI. Moon Area started the game off with two girls on and one out,
but the Wolverines turned a inning-ending double play to get out of the jam
and cruise on their way to a 6-0 win over Moon Area. The Girls (9-0 in

Riverside Girls Get Revenge On Butler
April 16,2008
The Panthers visited Butler Tuesday evening to face off against the only
opponent who was able to hand to Panthers a defeat this season, and with 4
innings of scoreless action both teams where in for a battle. Butlers
pitcher retired the first nine Panthers, until Leah Prisuta's single into
left-center broke the ice, and the game started to heat up. The next few
innings the Panthers took advantage of three Butler errors and scored three
unearned an unanswered runs, allowing Riverside to shut-out Butler 3-0 and
improving their record to 8-1, 6-0 in Section 5-AA. Kari Falk recorded the
victory for the Panthers pitching 7 scoreless innings, striking out 9 with
no walks. The girls next travel to Laurel Thursday evening at 4:00 p.m. for

6-1
April 15,2008

City Wolverines traveled to Mohawk Monday to take on the Warriors, and with
10 hits the Ellwood City boys could only put up one run, as they fall to
Mohawk 6-1. For the Wolverines, Mike Winters went 3-for-3 while Ross
McDevitt, Chris Weisz and Trey McKim each recorded two hits apiece, in a
losing effort as with all those hits the Wolverines left the men on in
scoring positions. The Wolverines played 0-0 ball until the third inning,
then everything just came apart when the infield failed to turn a
double-play ball allowing the Worriers put up six runs. For the Wolverines
Carusone pitched 6 innings with 4 strike-outs and 2 walks. Ellwood City
(2-9, 1-4 in Section 5-AA) next host Beaver Falls Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
Panthers Rally In The Sixth To Overcome Neshannock's 8-6 Led
April 15,2008
The Riverside boy's varsity baseball team had

field conditions and the Panthers would find themselves down early on their
own turf. The Lancers who where coming off a 19-5 victory over the Ellwood
City Wolverines, held onto a 8-6 led, as the Panthers headed to the plate in
the bottom of the seventh inning. Riverside exploded with a 4 run seventh

Panthers would allow. After giving up the run Riverside started out the

Riverside Blanks Beaver Falls, 4-0
April 3,
2008
When Nick Wisor came to the mound to relive Riverside's Coulton Bunney in
the first inning, a no-hitter or perfect game probable wasn't on his mind,
but seven innings later with two outs left a no-hitter was all Wisor could
wish for. With one out in the seventh Beaver Falls catcher Joe Omogrosso
spoiled Wisor's no-hitter but didn't ruin the win and his complete game.
With perfect pitching on the mound the Panthers fired up the bats and in the
second inning put some points on the board. The Panthers loaded the bases in
the second as Nico Baldelli drew a bases loaded walk and Bud Main collected
an RBI infield single to put the Panthers up 2-0. Baldelli was at it again
in the fifth when he ripped a double off the left field fence, followed by
senior Justin king who sent a rocket RBI single into left center. King would
later score and the Panthers would add 2 runs in the fifth to seal up the
game behind Wisor's complete outing with a 4-0 victory over the Tigers.
Riverside (2-1, 1-0 in Section 5-AA) next host Summit Academy at 4
today, in a section game that has been moved up from
Friday.
Who Would Ever Think, Winter Training Would Be So
Important
April 2,
2008
Even
know the calendar says April 1, and the official season is spring the
Riverside track and field team hosted a meet that would see temperatures
drop 20-degrees and winds pick-up to 40 miles an hour all from the start and
end of their meet. The Riverside Panthers hosted the Mohawk Worriers Tuesday
afternoon, and as the weather got colder the Panthers got even hotter
posting wins thought the hole event, winning 90-60 over Mohawk. The Panthers
all were ready for the weather because of hard winter training and it paid
off Tuesday as Jonathon McElwain ran away with the 1,600 and 3,200 meter
runs as the 3,200 meter relay team also posted a big victory. For the girls,
senior Karen Yurkiw placed first in the 400 run as the girls 1,600 meter
relay team also come out victorious. The Riverside track and field team
(boys, 2-0 and girls 1-1) next travel to Union with Neshannock Thursday at

Windy Afternoon at Sanders Field, as Ellwood Falls One Run Short
April 2,
2008
Ellwood City varsity baseball team took the field Tuesday afternoon against
Deer Lakes, for what would be a low scoring, wet and windy day. Mike Sacco
started on the mound for the Wolverines and recorded two strike-outs with
three walks in five innings pitched. The Lancers put up a run in the third
and that's all they would need for the win 1-0, as the Wolverines only had
three hits in the game all singles. The Wolverines (1-4) next travel to

Back On Track
March 28,
2008
With a opening day loss,
the Riverside Varsity Softball team was fired up to play Laurel Thursday
afternoon at Riverside. Riverside started off the game slow when Laurels
Cassie Young singled into left field in the second inning putting Laurel on
the board first 1-0. Being down early must have sparked the Riverside
Panthers because after the RBI, starting pitcher Kari Falk retired the next
10 hitters in a row, which would be the last 10 batters she would face. With
perfect pitching on the mound the girls fired up the bats as Kalli Osborne
and Stefanie Kaiser delivered two RBI's apiece and the Panthers drew 12
walks against the losing pitcher. With the base's loaded in the third Falk
drew another walk and Kaiser ripped a two run single into left field
stretching the Riverside lead to 9-1. The girls kept their foot on the gas
in the fourth scoring three more runs, and with Falk tossing a two-hitter
she finished off the side as the mercy rule took affect and the Riverside Panthers took the win 12-1. The Girls (1-1, 1-0 in section 5-AA) next hosts
Slippery Rock in non-league play today at 4:00.

third with six runs of their own, and never looked back, as the Greyhounds
sent the Wolverines packing with a 10-8 loss. For the Wolverines, Stephen
Johns started on the mound while Kevin MacDonald, Mike winters, and Gino Ceriani also got some time on the mound in the losing effort. Ellwood City

RHS Girls Looking Ahead to Today's Section Opener Against Laurel
March 27,
2008
The
Riverside Panthers Varsity softball team took on Butler Wednesday afternoon
and came up two runs short falling to Butler 9-7. The Panthers came out
swinging and held onto a 5-1 lead at the bottom of the first, but Butler
closed that gap with a three run fifth inning to close the gap to 5-4. Not
to be outdone with the panthers fired back with two runs of their own in the
fifth, stretching that gap back to 7-4 heading into the sixth, and that's
the last time the Panthers would see the lead as Butler added 5 runs to
close out the game 9-7. Kari Falk records a loss for Riverside, but tossed a
good game, sitting down six batters and walking three in her complete game
outing. The Riverside Panthers host Laurel at 4:00 p.m. today to start off
their Section 5-AA schedule.

Runners Left In Scoring Position, as Ellwood Falls To Rochester 6-5
March 25,
2008
The
Ellwood City varsity baseball team went hit for hit with the Rochester Rams
Monday afternoon at Sander Field, till the Rams snapped a 1-1 tie with five
unanswered runs leaving the wolverines with two innings and six outs to come
back, and COME BACK is what they did. In the sixth inning Trey McKim lead
off with his second hit of the game, an RBI double to right scoring Ross
McDevitt and Mike Winters followed up with a RBI groundout to bring to score
to 6-3 and to end the inning. The Wolverines held the Rams off in the
seventh and headed back to the plate, as sophomore Kevin MacDonald ripped a
leadoff single down the right field line and Ryan Carusone walked as the
tying run came to the plate. The runners came around as McDevitt’s fly ball
dropped into right field and the Wolverines where back in business down by
one. That’s as close as they would come to the Rams as the pitcher retired
the rest of the Ellwood line up and sealed the deal for Rochester 6-5.....(view
