The Blackhawk Cougars upset the home team Ellwood City Wolverines, 4-0, in game two of the best-of-three Beaver County Colt League Championship Thursday evening.

For Ellwood City, Anthony Carusone and Greg Lynn provided RBIs to score the first two runs.
The local boys now has their backs against the wall as they will face elimination on Thursday, July 22, at 5:30 p.m. at Ellwood City.

Ellwood City sophomore second baseman Greg Lynn was selected for the 2010 All-section 5 Baseball team.
Wampum native drafted into the NHL
Tuesday, June 29, 2010
Jon-Paul Wimer, senior journalist
Many sports analysts consider the National Hockey League as one of the toughest sports for Americans to enter in to, mainly because of the Canadian and European supremacy.
So, when Stephen Johns was drafted in the second round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft at the Staples Center in Los Angles Saturday afternoon, he not only gave hope to young hockey players of the United States, but gave hope to all those players in western PA, and more particularly, Wampum.
“It’s an unbelievable honor to come from western Pennsylvania and kind of like a football area where hockey isn’t really a big sport,” said Johns at a press conference Saturday in Los Angeles. “It’s kind of put western Pennsylvania on the map now as kind of a hockey town.
Johns was selected 60th overall by the most recent Stanley Cup winning Chicago Blackhawk organization, who stated they were looking for both size and skill – and that is exactly what Johns possesses.
“He’s a big human,” said Chris Stern, head coach of the Pittsburgh Hornets, a Midget AAA Tier-1 Elite League team.
A big human? That might be an understatement.
Johns, who just recently turned 18-years-old, is a 6-foot-3, 215 pound, stay-at-home, aggressive defenseman – and he says he most resembles the play of Pittsburgh Penguins’ blueliner Brooks Orpik.
However, even though he may already possess the skills and traits needed to play in the NHL, Johns is determined to play at Notre Dame – at least for one year.
"Right now, my mind is set on Notre Dame, going there and having a good freshman year,” said Johns. “After that, we’ll see what happens.”
Jeff Jackson, head coach of the Fighting Irish hockey team, is proud to have the big, yet extremely skilled Lincoln High School graduate and former product of the USA Hockey National Developmental Team Program in Ann Arbor, Mich.
“Stephen is a big, rugged defenseman with excellent size and reach. From a defensive perspective, he's extremely aggressive and will add a physical presence to our defense,” said Jackson. “His grit and physical style of play will be a big factor for us.”
Right now, Johns is taking summer classes at Notre Dame and looking forward to beginning a new chapter in his hockey career.
Who would have ever thought that a kid growing up in a town of less than 700 – a football town, mind you – would be part of an NHL team?
And now, there is still one more question out there - when will Johns play his first NHL game for the Blackhawks? Only time will tell.
LHS athletes stand out in PIAA championships
Tuesday, June 1, 2010
Athletes from Lincoln High School put on strong performances at the PIAA Track and Field Championships this weekend at Shippensburg University.
Ellwood City boy’s 4x100-meter relay team finished in seventh place with a time of 44.0 seconds, earning them a medal in Class AA. The team consisted of Kevin Court, Kyle Crawford, Codey Hunter, and Shayne Nauman.
The medal-winning relay team made it to the finals with an even better preliminary time of 43.71 seconds. WPIAL leader Aliquippa could not make it out of the preliminary round with their time of 48.59 seconds.
Other strong performances in the PIAA championships came from Ellwood City’s Bobby Hozick and Abbey Eisenbrown.
Hozick, a junior from LHS, took fourth place in Class AA with a discus throw of 151 feet, 11 inches. Eisenbrown, a freshman, finished second among WPIAL girls and 17th place overall for her pole vault jumps of 9-9 and 9-7. She was the only freshman girl within the Class AA pole vault group.
Riverside duo falls to a tough doubles team
Tuesday, June 1, 2010
All good things must come to an end. This saying rang true as Riverside tennis team's Colby Beighey and Mason Marion fell to the tough doubles team from Wyomissing to end their magnificent undefeated season.
Beighey and Marion took on one of the best duos in the state in Alex Grimm and Zach Simon and lost in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, Friday afternoon at the Hershey Racquet Club.
In the second set, it looked as though the pair from Riverside may have figured something out as they only trailed 4-3, but this would be the closest they would get and lost the next two games to end the match.
Marion ended his sports career at Riverside, but not before excelling in tennis, basketball, and golf, while teammate Beighey will return as one of the best in the section, again.
Magic 15U team starts off strong
Tuesday, May 25, 2010
Bellissimo’s Ellwood City Magic 15U girls fast pitch team opened up their season last night with a victory over New Wilmington by the score of 11-1.
The 2009 defending tri-county champions had a strong pitching performance from Alex Conforti, holding New Wilmington to just one run on two hits.
Kara Sainato, Lauren Stiles, and Alex Conforti led the way for the Magic, each contributing to two hits each in the victory. Also for Ellwood City, Shylynn Barrett, Amanda Stiles, and Alex Conforti added extra base hits.
The Ellwood City Magic (1-0) travels to Shenango tonight for a 6 p.m. start.
EC Boys relay to head to states
Monday, May 24, 2010
The Ellwood City boys 400-meter relay team will be heading to the PIAA Track and Field Championships with a second place finish during Thursday’s WPIAL Class AA individual championships at Baldwin.
The relay team, consisting of Kevin Court, Kyle Crawford, Shayne Nauman, and Codey Hunter, finished the race with a school record of 44.1. The second place time qualified them for the state championship to take place at Shippensburg University this weekend.
Ellwood City’s Bobby Hozick will also travel to Shippensburg for states thanks to his second place throw of 139 feet in the discus.
For the girls, Abby Eisenbrown will head to states for the Wolverines with a fine performance in the pole vault. She had a record jump of 9 feet, 9 inches to finish in the fourth spot during the WPIAL championships.
Lady Panthers lose in WPIAL playoff
Friday, May 21, 2010
Although Emily Pritts and the Lady Panthers outpitched the Center Trojans during Thursday’s WPIAL round one matchup at Seneca Valley, the Trojans came away with the 1-0 victory to end Riverside’s season too soon.
Pritts was winning the battle in the pitching duel with Center’s Lauren Kaiser; however, it took just one bump in the fourth inning to cost the game for the Panthers.
Even though Pritts (12 strikeouts) only allowed two hits and one walk, these proved to be just enough to put away Riverside last night. Center's Brooke Callaghan walked and Kaiser singled her in for the only run in the game.
Kaiser also pitched a great game for the Trojans, striking out nine and only allowing four hits.
The Riverside Panthers end their season with a 13-6 record. Senior Chelsea Evans had two of the Panthers' four hits.
Wolverines lose in first round
Thursday, May 20, 2010
Double plays are back-breakers, especially when two of them eliminated threats of the Ellwood City baseball team scoring runs - and in a tight ball game - every run is vital. The Center Trojans turned two double-plays in the fourth and seventh innings, preventing the Wolverines from producing very important runs, thus leading to an eventual 3-1 loss in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs at Neshannock.
Leaving runners on base seemed to be the downfall for the Wolverines in their first trip back to the playoffs since 2003. Ellwood City left six players on base throughout the game.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Wolverines were down just one when Kevin MacDonald reached the base pads from a walk. MacDonald would later cross the plate on a Greg Lynn double, tying the game at one.
Yet, the equal score would be short-lived as the Trojans answered the Wolverines run in the fifth inning, scoring two decisive runs in the sixth to put them up 3-1.
Ellwood City would once again threaten with guys on base, but Center would turn its second double play to end the game and end the season for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines finish the season with a record of 13-8. Center moves on to the second round with a 17-3 record to play either Washington or Seton LaSalle on Friday.
Local teams compete in WPIAL playoffs today
Wednesday, May 19, 2010
Due to the recent postponement of the Monday and Tuesday WPIAL playoff games, the Ellwood City baseball team and Riverside softball team will now each play their respective first-round matchups Wednesday afternoon.
The Ellwood City Wolverines (13-7 overall, 8-4 section) will jump on the bus and head to the Neshannock ball field to take on the Center Trojans (16-3 overall, 11-1 section) at 4 p.m. today.
It seems that the Trojans live up to where they come from as they are the “Center” of attention for Ellwood City sports fans. The Riverside Panthers softball team (13-5 overall, 12-2 section) also battle the Center Trojans (12-7 overall, 9-5 section) at 4 p.m. today at Seneca Valley.
EC baseball playoffs scheduled to begin today
Monday, May 17, 2010
Ellwood City is back in the playoff scene, but they must wait for a few days of rain to pass before taking on the Center Trojans (16-3 overall, 11-1 section) in round one of the WPIAL playoffs at Neshannock.
The WPIAL announced today that all games for Monday and Tuesday have been postponed and that new times and dates will be stated later today. So, this will give the Wolverines extra preparation time before taking on a very tough Center team.
With only three losses on the season, the Trojans are the number one seed out of Section 1, holding the third best record in all of Class AA.
The Wolverines finished in third place in Section 5 and return to the WPIAL playoffs for the first time since they won the championship and PIAA title in 2003.
Probable pitchers for the upcoming game are Gino Ceriani for Ellwood City and the very tough right-hander Johnny Rossi for Center. Other pitchers for the Wolverines include Christian Kerns, Vince Magnifico, and Anthony Carusone.
The winner of this round one playoff matchup will play the winner of the game between Washington (13-5), (10-2) and Seton LaSalle (12-4), (8-4) with a time and location to be announced.
Riverside takes second at WPIAL final
Friday, May 14, 2010
For the past two years, the Riverside Panthers’ track team won WPIAL championships, with last year’s title coming from the defeat of Freeport. However, this year, Freeport took the championship over the Panthers.
Although the Panthers’ team championship run is over, there is still the Class AA individual championship to be held Thursday, May 20 at Baldwin.
The Riverside track team should be happy with the way they have performed through the years, though, winning back-to-back championships in 2008 and 2009, and getting to the finals consistently for six years.
Riverside's postseason ends in second round
Thursday, May 13, 2010
Jon-Paul Wimer, senior journalist
Although the Pittsburgh Penguins are an NHL team, there is one unfortunate similarity between the Riverside Panthers tennis team and the Penguins hockey team – they both lost in the second round of the playoffs.
After a remarkable undefeated regular season and winning their first playoff match against Bishop Canevin, 4-1, the Panthers fell to Hampton, 5-0, in the quarterfinal match Wednesday afternoon at Lakevue Racquet Club. They end the 2010 season with a 15-1 record.
Hampton was a very difficult opponent for the Panthers, losing only to Sewickley Academy during the regular season.
The season is not over for Riverside’s Mason Marion and Colby Beighey, though, as they prepare to battle in the opening round of the PIAA Class AA doubles tournament at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 27 at the Hershey Racquet Club.

The Riverside tennis team travels to Hampton at 3 p.m. today (weather permitting). Hampton took their first round matchup 5-0.
Wolverines must settle for third
Tuesday, May 11, 2010
Jon-Paul Wimer, senior journalist
A 12th inning blast at Sanders Field Monday afternoon eliminated all chances of Ellwood City finishing in second place, but they can take one good thing from the game – they battled like a playoff team with a playoff team.
The Wolverines were a playoff team regardless of Monday’s outcome, but with the loss to the Laurel Spartans 5-4 in 12 innings, Ellwood City goes into the playoffs as the third seed.
Laurel’s Brandon Ritchie knocked a two-run homerun in the top of the 12th to give the Spartans a two-run lead. Ellwood City would score one in the bottom of the inning, but it would not be enough.
Scoring for Ellwood City in the bottom of the 12th was Matt Germanoski off a Matt Morella single to center field. Germanoski ended the game with three hits including a double.
Ellwood City (13-7 overall, 8-4 section) still has two non-section games remaining against Knoch and Blackhawk.

Riverside duo ready for states; WPIAL playoffs start today
Monday, May 10, 2010
Jon-Paul Wimer, senior journalist
The Riverside tennis team went undefeated this season, and it was in large part due to the unbelievable play from Colby Beighey and Mason Marion. Now, the “untouchable twosome” has their eyes set on a larger goal – winning states.
Although they are winning machines on their own, combined, they are that much better. The duo qualified for the PIAA doubles tournament Friday by beating Dan Kearney and Brendan Blakeney of Mars, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, in the WPIAL finals match at Keystone Oaks.
Beighey and Marion will compete in the PIAA tournament on May 27-28 at the Hershey Racquet Club as the third seed in District 7.
However, the duo must wait as the undefeated Riverside tennis team (14-0) prepares to host Bishop Canevin in the WPIAL Section 2-AA playoffs at 3 p.m. today.
Riverside falls to section leader Mohawk
Friday, May 7, 2010
Jon-Paul Wimer, senior journalist
It took nine innings at Riverside to decide the outcome of an important section matchup Thursday between the Lady Panthers softball team and the Mohawk Warriors.
With an RBI single in the top of the ninth, the Warriors were able to put away the Panthers by the score of 2-1. Mohawk’s Rachel Scherer provided the game winning hit scoring Rachelle Miller.
Although it was a losing effort, Emily Pritts pitched a dominant game, striking out 13 and walking only one in the nine innings pitched.
The Mohawk Warriors (16-2 overall, 12-1 section) has clinched the Section 5-AA title, but Riverside still may have an opportunity to take a share of the section with a win against Ellwood City and a Mohawk loss.
Riverside (12-4 overall, 11-2 section) travels to Butler for a non-section game before taking on Ellwood City (11-7, 7-6) at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at Stiefel Park.

Ellwood tennis fights to the very end
Wednesday, May 5, 2010
Although they didn’t have the season they were hoping for, the Ellwood City boys tennis team gave it all they had in their last match of the season Tuesday afternoon; however, came up just short, falling to Ambridge, 3-2.
Ellwood City’s Jai Ranchod and James Mildner won their respective singles matches, but Matt Barnes and Jon Pogozelec were unable to pick up the doubles victory for the Wolverines after winning the first set.
The Ellwood City tennis team completed their 2010 season with an overall record of 2-12.
Lady Panthers don’t allow a hit
Wednesday, May 5, 2010
The Riverside Panthers’ softball team only needed one run in last night’s game to defeat Laurel thanks to Emily Pritts’ no-hit, five strikeout performance, thus putting them in the running for a section title.
Riverside (12-3 overall, 11-1 section) scored a run in every inning but the fourth, including a seven spot in the third, en route to a commanding 11-0 victory over the Laurel Spartans Tuesday afternoon.
Chelsea Evans had an impressive day for the Panthers, producing three hits, four runs scored, and an RBI, while Pritts, Kirsten Wilson, and Nicole Mansfield had two RBIs each.
The next game for the Panthers is an important Section 5-AA matchup with the Mohawk Warriors at 4 p.m. Thursday. Riverside hosts the possible section-deciding contest against the Warriors.

Ellwood baseball one step closer
Tuesday, May 4, 2010
Jon-Paul Wimer, senior journalist
Ellwood City had two things go their way Monday afternoon – they won and Laurel lost.
The Wolverines traveled to Herman, PA, to take on the last place section opponent Summit Academy Monday afternoon and came away with a 12-2 victory in five innings of play.
Anthony Carusone was credited with the victory for Ellwood City as he pitched two scoreless innings to start the game. However, the offense secured the game for the Wolverines, scoring five runs in the first and five in the fifth.
After scoring five in the first inning, the concern may have been shifted to the other game taking place in Mohawk, as the second place Laurel Spartans were in a tight game with the Warriors.
It took seven innings to determine a winner in the Laurel/Mohawk game. In bottom of the seventh with two men on and the game tied at seven, Laurel walked two consecutive batters, giving Mohawk the dramatic 8-7 victory.
Ellwood City and Laurel are now tied with a second place section record of 7-3. The Wolverines travel to Riverside (7-10 overall, 3-7 section) at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Playoff hope for EC baseball still in reach
Monday, May 3, 2010
Jon-Paul Wimer, senior journalist
Saturday’s matchup between Ellwood City and Beaver Falls was practically a playoff game. Unfortunately, the Tigers may have potentially clinched the number one spot – but playoff hope is still there for the Wolverines.
With a victory over the Tigers, Ellwood City could have tied the second place Laurel with a 7-2 record. However, Beaver Falls had other intentions, beating Ellwood City by a close margin, 5-4.
Beaver Falls’ pitcher Tyler Schuster had a near perfect game, successfully pitching a complete game with seven strikeouts and knocking in the game tying run in the sixth.
Ellwood City had a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth thanks to an Anthony Carusone RBI single, but it would be short-lived. The Tigers scored two runs in the sixth – just enough to get over the Wolverines.
It looks as though the Wolverines must finish in second place in order to qualify for the WPIAL playoffs, with Beaver Falls (9-1) pretty secure in the number one spot as they conclude with the 0-10 Summit Academy and 3-6 Riverside.
The Wolverines currently hold a section record of 6-3 while Laurel is sitting at second with a 7-2 record.
Ellwood City has three games remaining (all section). The Wolverines’ take on Summit Academy today, travel to Riverside on Wednesday, and host Laurel in a possible crucial matchup to end the season.
Laurel likewise has three section matchups remaining, with games between Mohawk (5-5) and Shenango (3-6) before taking on Ellwood City.
NOTE: Ellwood City traveled to Laurel on April 21 and lost by a very close 2-1 score. Laurel already beat Mohawk and Shenango this season by fairly convincing scores, 8-3 and 12-5, respectively.
Section 5: (Section Record) (Overall Record) as of 5/2
*-Beaver Falls Tigers : (9-1) (13-3)
*-Laurel Spartans : (7-2) (13-2)
Ellwood City Wolverines : (6-3) (11-6)
Mohawk Warriors : (5-5) (10-6)
Shenango Wildcats : (3-6) (9-8)
Riverside Panthers : (3-6) (7-9)
x-Summit Academy Knights : (0-10) (0-12)
You need more than one to beat Riverside
Friday, April 30, 2010
Shenango took an early lead against the Riverside Panthers’ softball team, but their one run would be their only run as they would easily take the victory, 4-1, under the lights Thursday night.
Emily Pritts pitched a commanding complete game, striking out six and walking only one. Pritts also scored a run after leading off the third with a walk.
Also for Riverside, Kiersten Wilson smashed a double and Lexi Wisor cracked a single, each adding an RBI in the third.
The Riverside softball team (11-3 overall, 10-1 section) travel to Laurel for a section matchup at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Riverside boys dethrone Laurel

After 7 shutout innings of pitching by Ryan Finnengan, 14 hits, and 0 errors the Panthers knocked Laurel out of first place in Section 5-AA with a 9-0 victory. Finnergan also had a solid day at the plate with 3 hits driving in 3 runs, as fellow teammates Brendan McAnallen and Jake Thellman both delivered 3 hit performances as the Panthers improve to 7-8, 3-5 in Section 5-AA. The Panther next host Mohawk in section action Friday.

Lady Wolverines softball not too impressive in Shenango
Wednesday, April 28, 2010
Although their midseason records are very similar, the final score did not reflect the way this game should have played out. Both Ellwood City and Shenango softball teams currently hold a 9-6 overall record, but the Wildcats played like they had a much better record, beating the Wolverines, 12-2, in Shenango Tuesday afternoon.
Shenango scored three in the first inning and added eight more runs in the final two innings to give Ellwood City a tough Section 5-AA loss. The Wildcats pitcher Alissa Smith struck out nine while on the mound and had three hits and two RBIs at the plate.
For Ellwood City, Kara Sainato had two hits including a RBI double in the first inning. Francesca Nardone also added a single for the Wolverines.
Ellwood City (9-6 overall, 5-5 section) hosts Beaver in a section matchup at 7 p.m. Thursday under the lights at Stiefel Park.

Wednesday, April 28, 2010
It only took three innings for the Riverside Panthers baseball team to send St. Joseph, a Class-A school, back to Natrona Heights after a 17-2 mercy-rule victory Tuesday afternoon.
Although it was considered a varsity non-section matchup, it was more of a junior varsity game as they possessed most of the playing time and scored the majority of the runs for the Panthers, showing them what is in store for the future.
Riverside’s Bryan Kolch tripled and singled, Royce Kranz had two doubles and two RBIs, and Brendan McAnallen hit two singles. The Panther's Jake Thellman also had two RBIs.
The Panthers (6-8 overall, 2-5 section) next matchup is at 4 p.m. today at Laurel.

Ellwood hands Riverside first section loss
Wednesday, April 21, 2010
Jon-Paul Wimer, senior journalist
9:50 AM - The Ellwood City girls softball team went into their matchup against Riverside with an even .500 record in the section, but the Panthers were looking down from the top with a perfect record – however, the Wolverines had intentions of breaking that perfect mark.
After beating Beaver Falls in an exciting 10-inning game Monday, the Wolverines were poised to hand another loss out to the undefeated Panthers – and did – by the score of 3-2 Tuesday afternoon.
Although Riverside jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on the Wolverines, the game remained the same until the top of the fourth when Ellwood City put the foot on the pedal.
With the bases loaded, Lindsey Lisko collected an RBI on a groundout that tied the game. Then, Jenna Ricciuti hit a ground ball that led to a rundown where Kara Sainato scored. Francesca Nardone followed Ricciuti with the final RBI scoring Christina Perrotta.
In the sixth inning, Riverside put some pressure on the Wolverines when Raven Boots singled to center to score Nicole Mansfield, cutting the lead to 3-2, but that would be all the Panthers could get.
The Ellwood City girls softball team (8-4 overall, 4-3 section) travel to Mohawk at 4 p.m. on Thursday. The Panthers (6-3 overall, 5-1 section) hosts Beaver in a section matchup at 4 p.m. also on Thursday.

Riverside got it done in 10 on Saturday; EC girls lose
Monday, April 12, 2010
Jon-Paul Wimer, senior journalist
9:20 AM - It may have resembled a Major League Baseball game on the scoreboard, but this was, in fact, a softball game that took an extra three innings to determine a winner – and that winner was Riverside.
The Lady Panther’s Chelsea Evans singled in Sinead McAnallen for the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th as Riverside took a very important Section 5-AA win, 4-3, over Neshannock Saturday afternoon.
This was a very atypical softball game for everyone involved. Because of a 3-3 tie at the end of nine innings, a tiebreaker of unusual sorts is scheduled to take place.
The tiebreaker in softball is set up so that a base runner is placed at second to begin each half inning (in hope of finally obtaining a tie-breaking run) – and the Panthers took full advantage.
Evans had yet another good day for the Panthers, finishing with three hits and two RBIs from the leadoff spot. Stefanie Kaiser had two hits and Nicole Mansfield singled twice and had one RBI.
The next game for the Riverside Panthers (3-2 overall, 2-0 section) is on the road and is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. against another section rival Shenango.
OTHER SCORES (4/9-4/10):
Shenango 4, Ellwood City 0
The Ellwood City Softball team (4-3, 0-2) was shut out by Shenango 4-0 Saturday in a Section 5-AA matchup at Stiefel Park.
Ellwood City 6, Shenango 5
The Wolverines baseball team (6-2, 2-0) had four runs in the seventh to come from behind and beat Shenango in fine fashion.
Riverside 16, New Brighton 12
Riverside Panther's baseball (4-3, 1-0) produced at least a run in all but one inning en route to a 16-12 victory on Friday.
