Shelter Renovation
July 3, 2008
ECO staff - Eric Johnson, Student Journalist

Just in time for the Arts and Crafts festival, the main shelter in Ewing Park, 2A-2B recently underwent a full renovation. ECO talked to Ellwood City’s borough manager and he provided information on the renovation and how it was possible to be completed.

The renovation was made possible through an organization called Adopt-A-Shelter. There were 10 sponsors who each gave $1,000 towards the overall renovation. The work will continue in the fall and next year to include all of the shelters in the park.

The kitchen in 2A-2B, which was a main target of the first phase of work, was renovated. A new electric stove was installed and a new roll-up door placed on the shelter.

A contracted company was hired to sandblast the steel beams in both shelters. And borough workers painted the shelter.

Most people that have been in the shelter know that it was a brown color, now the color is lively with Earth tone colors such as beige and blue. Shelter five also received a paint job and now includes meadow colors such as green and white and a concrete floor with a handicapped accessible ramp was installed.

The gardens that surround these shelters are also special. Last year the surrounding gardens won the PA horticultural award. Community gardeners are responsible for such a breathtaking environmental view.
