ELLWOOD CITY
– Lisa Ryan has served waffles and hash browns at C’s Waffles in New Castle for the last 15 years.

Today, she’s opening her own franchise of the business at the former Annie’s Fifth Street Grille, 225 Fifth St.

“I’ve always wanted to own a restaurant,” said Ryan, who along with her husband Michael was setting up on Friday for today’s opening.

The couple purchased the franchise from Rick Cotelesse, owner of the original C’s Waffle Family Restaurant on West State Street.

Cotelesse has franchises in Hubbard and North Lima, Ohio too.

Ryan said the Ellwood City restaurant will be open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, but she will remain open until 9 p.m. on Fridays to offer fish specials.

The menu is filled with breakfast foods served all day as well as a selection of salads and chicken and steak dinners.

Ryan said they are, of course, known for their waffles, but the loaded hash browns and sausage, biscuits and gravy dishes are also popular.

She said she jumped on the chance to open a C’s franchise when Cotelesse offered her the opportunity about six months ago.

“Since I started working at C’s in New Castle, people have been begging us to come to Ellwood City,” she said. Ryan said the original location brings in customers from Beaver County and Pittsburgh.

They looked at other locations in Ellwood City, but decided on Fifth Street since the building was already set up to house a restaurant.

Ryan said her husband will be keeping his day job and helping on weekends. Her daily help will come from their three children, Maria, 21, Wesley, 18 and Rocco, 17. The Ryan family lives in Shenango Township.

The entire family spent last week cleaning the restaurant and preparing for today’s opening.

Ryan said they’ve gotten a great response from people since putting the sign in the window.

They’ve even had people drive to the New Castle restaurant to ask if the Ellwood location is affiliated with the original C’s Waffles, she said.
