8:28 AM - It has been considered by some as the largest lighting installation of its kind in the United States, and it is all centering around an Ellwood City company.

Appalachian Lighting Systems, Inc. (ALSI) of Ellwood City was recently selected by the Allegheny County Airport Authority to manufacture 1,347 new light emitting diode (LED) lighting fixtures for the Pittsburgh International Airport.

ALSI will provide LED units for the parking deck and pick-up/drop-off area at the Pittsburgh International Airport as part of a new “green lighting project.”

Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato said this project will not only create new jobs for the Ellwood City area, but will also solidify the area’s standing as a leader in green technology and environmental stewardship.

Officials around the major installation are projecting it will save the Airport Athority at least $158,000 in energy costs each year.

Since its beginning in 2007, Appalachian Lighting Systems, Inc. has been specializing in developing and manufacturing high-powered, ultra energy-efficient, LED lighting fixtures.
