Magic show like no other
Wednesday, February 24, 2010
Jon-Paul Wimer, senior journalist

10:07 AM - The word ‘magic’ derives from the Latin word magicus from the Greek adjective magikos. Interesting? I think not.

Where the word magic derives can be very uninteresting, but what is guaranteed to not be uninteresting is actual magic itself.

The Mystic Magicians of Beaver County are set to perform a two-hour show at the Riverside High School auditorium Friday night from 7 to 9 p.m.

“This is not your typical ‘birthday party magic show’ that many may think,” said magician Doug Ries. “It’s going to be exactly like a touring show, except for the high cost to attend.”

The fundraising magic show for the Riverside After-Prom Committee and the non-profit Mystic Magicians will not be very expensive, with tickets at just $5 for students and $7 for adults.

“It’s an amazing show full of variety, and all for a great price,” said Ries. “Many magic shows are priced very high, but for the type of magic you will see during our performance, it really is a great price.”

From the time you walk, entertainment will be evident. In the lobby, there will be magicians Jay Brenner and Brad Brown, both from Ellwood City, providing close-up magic such as card and coin tricks.

The main event will feature stage magic from five amazing magicians. Eric Davis and Steve Haberman will perform comedic magic and Doug Ries will show what extreme magic is all about. Also performing are magicians Bob Mullins and Dick Recktinwald.

Whether you are a child, teen, or adult, this exciting magic show is guaranteed to be fun for all. There will be side show events particularly for children and comedic magic for teens and adults – simply put by Ries, “something for everyone.”

“It’s really nice to perform in my hometown,” said Ries. Some of the magicians are locals, including Ries, who was born and raised in Ellwood City and currently resides in Franklin.

Ries is the founder of Flip Disc Productions, a DJ and magic entertainer specializing in corporate functions, weddings, and other large events; but, he wasn’t always into magic. In 1994, Ries gained some interest in magic and began attending conventions on the special art. Before he knew it, his entertainment company had a new, exciting addition to it.

The entertainer-magician headlined numerous large venues, performing before music groups like the Goo Goo Dolls, Sugar Ray, Smash Mouth, and Christina Aguilera, to just name a few.

For some live entertainment from true entertainers and magic enthusiasts, come out to the Riverside High School auditorium and experience The Mystic Magicians Friday night from 7-9 p.m.

Contact Raylene Boots or any After-Prom Committee member for tickets. Tickets will also be available at the door.
