Ellwood City School Board Meeting

ELLWOOD CITY -- The Ellwood City Area School Board has taken no action to replace Ann Bartolomeo, but at least one parent wants the district to keep Bartolomeo’s substitute in place throughout the school year.
Nicole Santoro asked board members to keep Megan Santillo on the job through the rest of the school year. (read more)
Boat Launch Dedicated To Fallen Soldier

WAMPUM – Chuck Bevington knows his brother loved nothing more than fishing.
“He fished every chance he got. It was his whole passion,” Bevington of Ellport said of his younger brother, Allan.
So Saturday’s dedication of the boat launch site on River Road, about a half-mile from Route 288, named for Sgt. Allan Bevington will be bittersweet for Chuck Bevington.
“I’m happy it’s going to be named after him, but I’d gladly give it up to have him back,” Chuck Bevington said. (read more)
Giovanna DeLuca on the Road to Home

ELLWOOD CITY – Giovanna DeLuca just keeps amazing her parents.
Born July 22 with multiple organ abnormalities, Giovanna was not expected to live more than a few days. Today she’s on the road to a normal childhood and her parents hope to have her home soon.
“She really is our miracle baby,” her mother, Nikki DeLuca, said this week. (read more)
School Board Looks at New Athletic Policies

ELLWOOD CITY -- Ellwood City Area School Board members are considering several changes in the district’s athletic policies and programs.
High School Principal Joe Mancini outlined the plans that covered everything from coaches salaries to new student athlete initiatives for board members at Monday’s committee meeting. (read more)

Animal Blessing

Animals big and small – some even stuffed -- were blessed Saturday in the parking lot of Holy Redeemer School on the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi.
The Rev. Mark Thomas gave the blessing to the nearly 30 pets and their owners in the parking lot at noon. St. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of animals and a blessing service is held every year in his honor. After a brief service, Thomas individually blessed each animal.
Most of those attending brought dogs and cats and some of the children brought stuffed animals for blessing too.

Ford Feature Will Let Parents Set Limits For Teens

So you think junior is a little too lead-footed when he drives the family car? Starting next year, Ford Motor Co. will give you the power to do something about it.
The company will roll out a new feature on many 2010 models that can limit teen drivers to 80 mph, using a computer chip in the key.
Parents also have the option of programming the teen's key to limit the audio system's volume, and to sound continuous alerts if the driver doesn't wear a seat belt.

Franklin Supervisors to Replace Police Chief

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP – Franklin Township supervisors are planning to replace the current police chief with a township native.
Supervisor Curt Steffler said nothing has been done officially, but Chief Bob Morrison will resign and supervisors intend to hire Joe O’Shea as police chief. O’Shea is a township native who is currently a Beaver County sheriff’s deputy, said Steffler.

Community Declares Victory Over Halfway House

WAYNE TOWNSHIP – Blowing car horns going past Tony Busin’s house on Wampum Road were the sweet sound of victory.
The drivers were reacting to the news that plans for a 200-bed halfway house proposed just down the street were dead after the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections canceled its contracts with Community Alternatives, a New Castle-based social service agency. (read more)
