The Ellwood City Girls Basketball team used an impressive 23-3 first quarter spurt to cruise to a 47-15 victory over rival Riverside on Tuesday night. Three Wolverines finished in double figures led by senior guard Kyla Servick who finished with a game-high 12 points. Saige Chambers (11 points) and Emily Sedgwick (10 points) joined Servick in double figures for an Ellwood City team (7-9 Overall, 4-5 Section 1-3A) that has now collected three consecutive victories. Ellwood City used a decisive first quarter to race out to an early lead in its eventual 60-45 victory over rival Riverside Friday evening at Riverside High School. The Wolverines used 10 first quarter points by sophomore Joseph Roth to race out to a 19-4 advantage.  The 15 point cushion held through halftime as the teams played even through halftime with Ellwood City ahead 31-16 at the break. PHOTOS: 2021 Wampum Christmas Parade

Wampum held its 49th Annual Christmas Parade on Saturday. Over 50 units, including cars, floats, bands and marching groups participated in the parade. which is billed as the biggest Christmas parade in Lawrence County. This year the parade was dedicated to Frank Yoho of Wayne Township, who had portrayed Santa Claus in the parade for 28 years. Yoho passed away on June 26 at the age of 81 and is greatly missed by the Wampum community.  In addition to portraying Santa, Frank lent his considerable handyman skills to the Wampum Christmas Parade Committee on projects including creating the display which…

Ellwood City held its annual Light Up Night in downtown Ellwood City on Friday with the official lighting of the Christmas tree and ensuing fireworks display. After a year hiatus, the event returned with various activities for families and vendors set up on Lawrence Avenue. A horse-drawn sleigh, a local singer, a DJ and a brass quintet playing Christmas carols all welcomed visitors for Ellwood City and the surrounding communities who descended on Lawrence Avenue for the evening. Congratulations to the 2021 winners of the annual EllwoodCity.org Halloween Costume Contest! The grand prize winner of the EllwoodCity.org contest was Lorenzo Geminiani, 9 months, and our second place winner was Connor Mannion. Lorenzo, dressed as the Lion from Wizard of Oz, collected over 260 likes to earn the first place cash prize. The Riverside Panthers fell to the visiting New Brighton Lions 34-0 Friday night during its Senior Night game at Riverside Memorial Stadium. Sam Hughes scampered for two touchdowns to lead the Riverside Panthers to their first victory of the season, a 19-0 victory over rival Ellwood City on Friday night during Homecoming at Riverside’s Memorial Stadium. Madeline Dimeo was named Riverside Homecoming Queen during halftime. Hughes, who finished with 90 yards rushing, scored from 21 years and 19 yards while Brady Barton found the endzone on a 45 yard touchdown for the Panthers (1-4, 1-6 overall). After a year hiatus due to COVID-19, the annual Lincoln High School Pie Festival and fall sport festivities returned to Helling Stadium Friday evening. The marching band performed their 2021 pre-game and halftime shows and all fall sports teams were introduced.
