Ominous skies surrounding Sanders Field Tuesday afternoon when the Ellwood City Wolverines were set to host Mohawk for the second game of their home-and-home series with the Warriors. The afternoon started with senior recognition for the five Wolverines seniors prior to first pitch, but the game was not able to be completed. The game was halted at a pivital junction due to rain and will resume Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. with Ellwood City leading 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning. The Ellwood City baseball and softball teams both earned victories on Monday. The Lady Wolverines earned a resounding 10-0 victory over Beaver Falls as part of their Senior Night festivities. The boys baseball team will look for a mini sweep and to match the softball senior night victory when they host Mohawk on Tuesday at Sanders Field in Ewing Park. PHOTOS: Ellwood City Amateur Baseball Season Begins!!!

The Ellwood City Amateur Baseball Federation (ECABF), one of western Pennsylvania’s oldest amateur baseball programs, held their 73rd Annual Opening Day on Saturday at the Ewing Park Baseball Complex. Players from the Little League, Minor League, Farm League and Tee-Ball League participated in a parade to Freidhoff Field-the home of the first Little League program, in Lawrence, Beaver, Butler and Mercer counties. Seventeen teams, led by Mayor Anthony Court, were greeted by the Ellwood City Wolverines’ Head Coach Chris Weisz, his staff and varsity players. ECABF board member Mike Widmaier greeted the players, coaches and fans before the ceremonies began….

The Ellwood City Wolverines track and field teams earned victories over Union Area this past weekend at Union. For the boys, in its 105-44 victory, Brennen Marsh (200m) 26.1., Anthony Spadafore (400m) 59.5., Marley Schwiger (800m) 2:11.5., Nolan Currain (1600m) 5:30.1., and Kaiden Schlicenrull (3200m) 12:20.8. earned first place finishes for Ellwood City. Brayden Hendrickson collected individual first place finishes in the 100 hurdles (18.9) and 300 hurdles (50.0) to help the Wolverines. PHOTOS: Harper Tosses 3-Hitter, Panthers Shutout Wolverines

Panthers starter Ronnie Harper pitched a gem Thursday, twirling five shutout innings as Riverside easily blanked the visiting Wolverines 10-0. Harper allowed just three hits. He struck out six batters and did not issue a walk. The Panthers, now 7-1 overall, secured the victory thanks to seven runs in the second inning. Hunter Garvin, Drake Fox, Madden Boehm, and Bo Fornataro, who all drove in runs in the second frame. Boehm slugged a second inning homerun en route to his four-RBI performance. PHOTOS: 2022 Easter Egg Hunt

A rainy forecast did not deter hundreds of hoppy-go-lucky kids from taking part in the annual Ellwood City Easter Egg Hunt in Ewing Park on Saturday. The event started at 11:00 a.m. amid overcast skies and ran throughout the early afternoon with hunts for all ages. Additional events included a petting zoo, pony rides, trackless train, and a Kid’s Zone in the Rotary Shelter, which featured crafts, face painting, games and various other activities in the Bocce Court will be games. The days event are provided through The Ellwood Area Egg Hunt Committee.


PHOTOS: Riverside, Ellwood City Track & Field

Riverside hosted a track meet Tuesday afternoon against Shenango and Ellwood City. The visiting Wildcats collected victories over Riverside (79.5-70.5) and Ellwood City (133-17) while Riverside was able to defeat the Wolverines (124-26). The teams will next look forward to the Beaver County Track Championships scheduled for April 9, 2022. VIDEO: Connoquenessing River Flooding

A major weather event brought persistent rain to the area throughout the day on Thursday leading to major flooding concerns and local road closures. Below is aerial video footage of the flood damages of the Connoquenessing River near the Riverside School District and the Connoqunessing Country Club.  The river crested and put parts of Mercer Road and Country Club Drive underwater. Wolverine Wrestling Wraps Up Regular Season, Senior Night

The Ellwood City Wrestling team wrapped up its regular season this week with two matches, including their senior night on Wednesday evening. The team was defeated by Sharon 45-30 at home Wednesday and also fell to Slippery Rock 34-30 on the road Thursday. The team will next look towards tournament On Wednesday, two seniors Jaden Stull (his first year wrestling) and Donavin Stiffler (his second year wrestling) were recognized prior to the match.  For Ellwood City, Ben Gallenz (126 lb) pinned Camden Reiser, 2:34, and Michael Swesey (172 lb) pinned Muawiyah Maani, 0:32 for victories.  Ellwood also earned three victories…


PHOTOS: Wolverines Defeat Beaver Falls on Senior Night

Ellwood City remained unbeaten in section play, one night after clinching an outright section championship, with a 65-52 victory over Beaver Falls on Tuesday. Senior Steve Antuono led the charge with a game-high 24 points (10-12 FTs, two 3-pointers, six assists, two steals) while two fellow seniors, Alexander Roth (14 points, four rebounds, four assists) and Peyton O’Brien (13 points, two blocks), joined him in double figures. Ellwood City led comfortably at halftime 29-15 and survived a second half surge by the visiting Tigers before free throws helped settle things down and help claim victory.
