Old Photo Friday: Borough Property Nativity Scene

Although the photos are not very old, they are certainly a thing of the past after a Wisconsin-based anti-religion group threatened to sue the Borough of Ellwood City in 2011 if they didn’t take down the traditional nativity display, which has since been absent from the property. The group, Freedom From Religion Foundation, promotes nontheism and defends the constitutional separation between religion and government, their website states. The last year the nativity was standing on Borough property was in 2011, after the council members voted 4-2 in favor of removing the scene from municipal property beginning in 2012. A council…

PHOTOS: Winter Wonderland in Ellwood City

You either love it or you hate it, but regardless of how you feel about the snow there’s no denying it has blanketed Ellwood City overnight. Last year during December we had hardly any snow and the average temperatures were in the 50’s and upwards. Despite this year’s snow, there are many townspeople out and about, some cleaning their cars off and others going in and out of the stores on Lawrence Avenue. EllwoodCity.org staff would like to remind everyone to exercise precaution, especially while driving, during the times of freezing weather and snow. Check out some photos of the…

PHOTOS: Gingerbread House Contest

If you haven’t seen the gingerbread houses made by the stylists at Shear Paradise Salon on Lawrence Avenue, you’re missing out! There are four gingerbread houses on display, each one designed completely by the stylists. The public gets to choose which house they like the best by casting their vote inside the salon, and the winner receives a gift card. Voting ends the Saturday before Christmas – get down there and cast your vote, you’ll know you’re at the right place when you see the darling Rudolf display in the window! Old Photo Friday: Time Capsule

This week’s Old Photo Friday is a photo of three men (names not listed) burying a time capsule. The year the photo was taken is stated 1992. There is not much info included with the photo, so we don’t know who the men are, where the capsule is buried (it looks like it’s near the municipal building), or what’s in it, but we would love to know – so comment below or on our Facebook post with any information you might have! SPOILER ALERT: House Tour Event Features Local Church

The Ellwood City Municipal Woman’s House Tour features something a little different this year – a church! Trinity Lutheran Church will be part of the tour, and it is truly a magical sight to say the least. From the aw-inspiring stained glass windows to the realistic decorative organ pipes, the Christmas decor adds an appropriate accenting holiday atmosphere. According to Barb Beachem, a life-long member of the church, it took about six church volunteers to put the decorations up and only about an hour to do so, not including the time it took to hang ornaments. Besides the manger, which…
