Normally when the Panthers and the Wolverines are in one gym you can cut the tension with a knife, however not last week. On Friday, both schools came together in honor of the late Kaitlyn “Kait” Francis who had passed away January 28. Francis was an Ellwood City senior who lost her battle with cancer after being diagnosed back in elementary school. Riverside used a third quarter surge to pull away to its 59-47 rivalry victory over Ellwood City on Friday.  The victory capped a season sweep for the Panthers in the two- game Riv-Ell series. After a quick six point surge to start the third frame, Ellwood City responded to cut what had become a seven point lead down to a single possession. Maria Ioanilli’s late steal and 3-point play sparked the Lady Wolverines to a 38-36 rivalry victory over Riverside on the road Thursday night. With her team trailing with less than 90 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, the sophomore forward collected a steal and went coast-to-coast for a layup under duress, earning a 3-point play with the earned free throw to boost Ellwood City  (13-9 Overall, 6-8 Section 3A-1) back in front of what was a back and forth game for much of the second half. PHOTOS: Panthers Fall To Tigers On Senior Night

The Riverside Panthers boys basketball team was defeated by Beaver Falls 68-39 Tuesday night.  Senior basketball players and cheerleaders were recognized as part of senior night festivities prior to the tip-off. Junior Ben Hughes finished with 11 points for the Panthers who could not overcome a 20-point first quarter outburst by the visiting Tigers. Jalen Vaughn (22 points) and Gage McKelvey (21 points) led the offensive output for Beaver Falls (9-11 overall). PHOTOS: Seniors Shine In Section Victory Over Mohawk

The inside-outside duo of seniors Natalia Greco and Isabella Roth combined for 29 points to lead the Lady Wolverines to 51-39 senior night victory over Mohawk Monday night. Roth collected four 3-pointers en route to her team high of 17 points while Greco battled inside earning 16 free throw attempts (10 made FT) on her way to 12 points.  The duo scored eight of the team’s 12 points in the final frame help close out the victory which marked a third consecutive victory for Ellwood City. The Ellwood City Revitalization held its 3rd Annual Winter Wine and Brew Fest on Saturday afternoon at the Ellwood City Sons of Italy Club.  The event featured beer and wine tasting, entertainment, DJ, raffles, catered food, and a Chinese Auction. Over 25 baskets donated by local businesses along with two gun raffles, sponsored by Duke’s Sport Shop, and two 50/50 raffles! Participation benefits the Ellwood City Revitalization projects. The Riverside Panthers stifled the Ellwood City Wolverines offense on its way to a 57-33 rivalry victory at home Tuesday night. Ben Hughes, Kevin Kolesar, and Nathan Sciarro led the Panthers offense, while the Riverside defense held Ellwood City to a single field goal in the second quarter, 14 points in the first half, and an overall 23% shooting performance. The Lady Wolverines claimed a 42-31 rivalry victory over Riverside on their home court Monday night. Balanced scoring a third quarter spurt helped the Wolverines pull away in the tightly contested game. Ellwood City held Riverside to a single field goal in a 3rd quarter that stretched what was a five-point halftime lead out to an 11-point cushion. All six Wolverines who played collected field goals led by Senior Isabella Roth finished with a game high of 15 points (four 3-pointers) including twelve in the first half. VIDEO: Ellwood City Medical Center Latest, GoFundMe Created

KDKA reporter Ralph Iannotti once again brought recent details in a video posted over the weekend following the “on-again, off-again payroll mess” at the Ellwood City Medical Center. According to the video report, the medical center failed to pay its December electric bill, which has cause some in the community to want to take action. Mayor Anthony Court said the borough would “ignore penalty or interest charges on the electric bill for the next three months.” The only stipulation, the Borough’s mayor stated in the published report is the money saved has to go to help some of the hospital employees….


VIDEO: Lawmaker Calls For Investigation Into Ellwood Medical Center

Employees are still on the job, keeping the Ellwood City Medical Center open and safe, but without pay.  This may change as state and Lawrence County lawmakers are now calling for an investigation into the medical center. Last week, employees finally received good checks owed before Christmas – two weeks late – amid a series of recently reported payroll problems. According to a KDKA report, services have been dropped and departments have been closed. The century old medical center has gone from around 400 people to about 190.
