PHOTOS: Riverside ‘Panther Night’

The annual Riverside community event, Panther Night, kicked off back to school season Thursday evening at Riverside Memorial Stadium. The free event offered attendees the opportunity to be introduced to fall sports teams, athletes, and enjoy fundraising booths throughout the stadium grounds.  Many booths offered food items or a raffle ticket to help support their respective organization or group. The Riverside Varsity Football team will host Our Lady of the Sacred Heart on Friday, September 3rd at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Stadium to start their football season. PHOTOS: Franklin Township 8th Annual National Night Out

Franklin Township celebrated and held their 8th Annual National Night Out Event Tuesday evening under warm, sunny skies at the Franklin Plaza in Ellwood City. The event featured free activities for children, fire safety, CPR training, prize giveaways, and food vendors. The popular Penguins mascot Iceburgh also made his appearance bringing joy to all those in attendance. The National Night Out initiative began in 1984 in an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie, and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

VIDEO: Route 288 Detour Near Zelienople Airport Announced

At a virtual public meeting held on Monday, Joe Neubert, project manager for Independence Excavating, announced that the realignment of Route 288 at Zelienople Road and Route 1010, Lake Road, adjacent to Runway 17 of the Zelienople Municipal Airport, will begin Monday, July 19, 2021. The road closure will begin on July 19, with signs indicating closure dates and detour signs, adding they have been given 102 calendar days for the road closure, with the road to be open on or before October 28, 2021. PHOTOS: Wolverines Fall To Lady Chucks In Extra Innings Of PIAA Opening Round

A walk-off single propelled Punxatawney to a 4-3 ten-inning victory over WPIAL runner-up Ellwood City in the opening round of the PIAA Class 3A softball playoffs Monday afternoon at Heindl Field in DuBois. After tying the game with two outs in the seventh frame, Kaylee Guidice drove in the game-winning run with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th for the Lady Chucks. The 10th-inning rally started with the international tie-breaker rule in place, putting a courtesy runner on second base. Wolverines Fall In WPIAL Championship; Move On To PIAA

Top seeded Mt. Pleasant ripped ten doubles in its convincing 15-0 victory over Ellwood City in the Class-3A WPIAL Softball Championship Game on Wednesday at Cal U. The 11-seeded Wolverines were seeking a fourth WPIAL title but fell one game short in defeat after its victories over No. 6 Deer Lakes, No. 3 Waynesburg and No. 7 Southmoreland to gain entry in the championship game. VIDEO: Ongoing Investigation Into An Early Morning Shooting On Mercer Road

According to multiple news reports, a man was shot early Tuesday morning in Ellwood City, Lawrence County. The shooting happened about 2:30 a.m. on Mercer Road, near Cutoff Street. Police had Mercer Road blocked off with crime scene tape and at least a dozen evidence markers were placed on the road. An SUV that had its windows shot out was towed away. The man who was shot was taken to a hospital, officials said. Ellwood City 6th grade students participated in their annual 6th grade Olympics this past Thursday May 20th at Helling Stadium in Ewing Park. The day started off with a parade of classes in the morning before the events began. The team names represented each of the students homerooms. The teams were as follows:  Agostinelli All Stars; Bing’s Bandits; Mrs.Cortez’s Charging Cheetahs; Morella’s Wolverines; Ott’s Bots ; The Rozanski Royals Morella’s Wolverines won the Tug Of War Championship.

For the sixth consecutive season, the Wolverine softball team won a first round playoff game. Last week, the Wolverines traveled to South Park and cruised to a 12-3 victory, but on Wednesday evening, the Eagles turned the tables and cruised to a 9-2 win on Ellwood City Senior Night. Ellwood City seniors Maria Ioanilli and Makinley Magill were recognized prior to the game as part of the Senior Night festivities.
