The Riverside Lady Panthers knocked off rival Ellwood City 55-31 to wrap up a season sweep of the Wolverines and also clinch a playoff birth in the WPIAL Class 3A Playoffs Thursday night. The Panthers (14-3 overall, 7-2 section) rebounded from a sluggish first quarter and used two 18-point quarters in the second half to pull away from the host Wolverines. Lincoln High Wins First Bocce Match of the Season

The first season of bocce matches for Ellwood City’s Lincoln High School is already proving to be a success. Ellwood reigns champion against New Wilmington after their first and only home game, which included the support of the high school’s band and cheerleaders, on Tuesday night. Everyone likes a good encore. But for Panthers and Wolverines players and fans, this Rivalry 2.0 game was too much like the original. Once again, the Panthers overcame a slow start, a first quarter deficit, and early Wolverine momentum to mount another sound defeat of Ellwood City 60-48 Friday night a Section 1-3A showdown. After two successful summer seasons, the Ellwood City Basketball League is preparing for their third season – this time as a winter league. “We have some really good teams in the league, it’s competitive, but it’s also about having fun and hanging out with friends,” Matt Boffo, a coordinator for the organization stated. The Ellwood City Wolverines used an early cushion to easily cruise to a 59-34 victory over New Brighton Tuesday night while the Riverside Panthers found their stroke from the free throw line to hold on and beat Aliquippa 61-59.  With victories for both squads, Ellwood City (8-7 overall) next travels to Riverside (10-6 overall) for their second meeting of the season – with playoff implications on the line. Congratulations to the Ellwood City Wolverine Wrestling Team, who just finished their last section match against South Side and won 40-23 clinching the 2nd place spot in our subsection 1B with a section record of 4-1. Five Wolverine wrestlers were victorious in their final matches at the Midwestern Athletic Conference Tournament, which was held January 6-7 at Hopewell High School. In championship matches, at the 132 pound weight class – Ellwood City’s Tyler Alberts collected a major decision and victory over Jake Pail, Freedom, 8-0. The Riverside Panthers used a balance scoring attack Friday night in their 66-51 rivalry victory over Ellwood City. Speicher Connects On Eight 3-pointers, Panthers Shoot Down Summit

Dylan Speicher connected on a school record 8 3-pointers Wednesday night to propel the Panthers to a 76-61 victory over Summit Academy.
