EC Wrestling Team Finishes 12th Place, Shriver Takes 2nd In Mercer VFW Tournament

Sophomore Logan Shriver placed 2nd overall in his 107-pound weight class at the Mercer VFW Wrestling Tournament last week to help boost the Wolverines wrestling team to its 12th place overall finish. Shriver, a second year wrestler, secured a place in the championship match after he earned a 5-1 decision victory over Lexi Doerflinger (Slippery Rock) in the semifinals. Also earning a spot on a podium was sophomore Derek Allen, whom finished 3rd overall in the 114-pound weight class. Allen finished 3-1 in the tournament. The Ellwood City girls basketball team was busy this week with three games on the schedule. The Lady Wolverines collected its lone win of the week with a non-section road victory Wednesday night over New Castle. After trailing by nine entering the final quarter, Ellwood City rallied for a thrilling 48-47 victory. Claire Noble finished with a double-double (15 points, 15 rebounds, 3 steals) to lead a well rounded offensive attack for Ellwood City. The Ellwood City Bocce team is making strides according to head coach John Dibuono. The team split decisions against Butler and Seneca Valley this past week. On January 10th the Ellwood City bocce team took on Butler. Butler prevailed in the matchup three games to one. The team faced Seneca Valley on Wednesday January 18th. Ellwood City’s prized fighter Rosalindo Morales has come a long way from stepping in the ring for the first time when he was 13 years old. This Friday he will be featured in a fight on Showtime’s Shobox: The New Generation live at 9:00 p.m. Morales will be part of three bouts that will take place at the Wind Creek Casino in Bethlehem, Pa. Riverside Rallies, Knocks Off Wolverines In Overtime

After trailing by as many as 20 points late in the third quarter, the visiting Riverside Panthers rallied to force overtime and pull away for a thrilling 50-47 victory over Ellwood City Tuesday night. Sophomore Drake Fox’s 3-pointers with under 15 seconds in regulation knotted the game. Two Junior High Wrestlers Place At Indiana Tournament

Ellwood City junior high wrestlers Brayden McClure (87-pound class) and Cheyenne Berglund (94-pound class) each placed fourth for the Wolverines in a 23-team wrestling tournament held last weekend. The team competed in the Indiana (PA) Eagles/Good & Associates Tournament on Saturday, January 14th. McClure and Berglund each reached the 3rd place match in their respective weight class in the tournament. McClure finished with a 4-2 record while Berglund finished with a 2-2 record. Ellwood City 7th-grader Brayden McClure won a third place medal at the Junior High MAC Wrestling Tournament that was held on Friday, January 6th at Freedom High School. Junior Joseph Roth scored a season high 42 points Friday night as the Wolverines routed Freedom 73-39 at Lincoln High School.
