Halloween is a time of year when ghost stories, folklores, and other scary tales begin to surface. In and around Lawrence County, one story seems to never lose its fascination. Mary Black, an alleged witch in Lawrence County during the 1800s, has been the antagonist of countless folklores since the 1950s. Her life, and the stories that accompany it, is constantly debated – but, is it fact, fiction, or perhaps a little of both. The answer is a little of both. Police: Man Assaults Ex-Girlfriend; DUI Leads to Rear-Ending

DUI Leads to Rear-Ending Two Vehicles According to a criminal complaint, on Oct. 16 around 5 p.m., Amber Servick, 33, of New Castle, rear ended two vehicles stopped at red lights at intersections on Sixth and Fifth Streets. Both struck vehicles suffered minor damage. Investigating officers determined that Servick was intoxicated. She was charged with two count of driving under the influence and one count of causing damage to a vehicle. PA Senate Sends Housing Trust Fund Expansion to Governor

HARRISBURG, PA – Pennsylvania’s state Senate on Tuesday sent legislation to expand the state housing trust fund to the governor for signature. “The Senate’s 47-1 vote coupled with the unanimous vote in the House reflects the broad bi-partisan commitment to a home within reach of all Pennsylvanians,” said Liz Hersh, executive director of the Housing Alliance of Pennsylvania. Moose Club Hosts Butterfly Foundation Bash

The Ellwood City Moose Lodge will host the Butterfly Foundation’s 4th Annual Butterfly Bash, in memory of Christina Whelan on Saturday, November 7 at 8 p.m. The event will feature a Chinese auction and DJ Franco. CVS Construction Scheduled for End of Year

Construction work for the new CVS Pharmacy should start by the end of the year, pending the finalization of bids and obtaining building permits. The CVS will be located on Spring Avenue and Fifth Street, where the closed St. Agatha Catholic Church is now. In addition to St. Agatha, nine other properties will be removed as the pharmacy will extend beyond Locust Way. In July, borough council passed ordinances that consolidated the nine additional properties that would be consumed by the CVS Pharmacy and vacated a portion of Locust Way.
