“All Aboard Ellwood” Comes Rolling In

A local group that calls themselves “All Aboard Ellwood” began 3 years ago in hopes to be able to commemorate Ellwood City’s once thriving railroad industry. The community focused volunteer group was able obtain a piece of property at the corner of Fifth Street and Spring Avenue which started the next phase of their plain; gaining a rail car of some type or a replica of a historical railroad building. When the group realized it was further away from the existing tracks, the property was sold and the profit they made from it was planned to be used to further…

PHOTOS: New Wooden Bridge Constructed In Ewing Park

In July, a new little attraction was added into Ewing Park – a cute little wooden bridge surrounded by hand painted rocks and some flowers. The idea was born in the spring by the Director of Public Works, Randy Gatto. Gatto wanted to create a peaceful place for families to use as a memory maker. He hopes it’ll be used for family portraits or even for recently engaged couples to take pictures at. Since it’s placement, the little hands of Ellwood City have already gotten to work painting the rocks surrounding it. According to Public Works Secretary Rhiannon Schnell, the…

On Monday, July 20, 2020, Mayor Anthony J. Court presented a  proclamation to Evan Barton. Last week Barton performed a heroic deed,  by rescuing a women from a burning vehicle. Evan Barton was traveling  into Ellwood City on Woodside Avenue when he observed a vehicle in front  of his vehicle. The vehicle was smoking and appeared to be on fire. After repeated attempts, Evan was able to get the attention of the driver who eventually pulled off the side of the roadway with the vehicle on fire. He then ran to the driver inside the vehicle and observed the driver…

Letter To The Editor: Chaos on EC School Board

I spent the last 12 years on the Ellwood City School Board before stepping down in December at the end of my third term. Through that experience, I have first-hand knowledge of how this Board operates. The way this Board has treated Superintendent Joe Mancini is a disgrace. Mr. Mancini did a great job during his years as Superintendent, but certain members of the Board have been out to get him for some time. Unfortunately, when I retired from the Board and Ms. Woodhead was not re-elected in the last election, there was a shift on the Board. Finally, when,…

PHOTOS: Carpenters Project Rebuilding Post COVID

Starting in 2002, the Carpenters Project has helped many families with exterior house projects and even during the pandemic of a century they didn’t take a break this year. Planning for their work week in July began back in March. With the changing health situations, the plans and needs for this year kept switching. Ultimately, it was decided that this years focus would be on helping homeowners with safety concerns. “Some of the phone calls that we receive from homeowners are scary,” said Steven Miller, Carpenters Project Director. “People are relying on us to help them get in and out…

ECASD Planning Multiple Options for Back to School

Back to School this year could look quite different for the Ellwood City Area School District. Due to Covid-19, going back isn’t just as simple as going back. With state mandates and guidelines changing weekly, if not daily, administrators and educators in the district are working to develop multiple plans for multiple scenarios. The district’s pandemic task force and its subcommittees have been meeting regularly to make sure that students can return safely. “In late June, we were hoping for a full reopening,” said ECASD’s Superintendent Joseph Mancini at a recent board of directors meeting. Mancini said that hope changed…

VIRTUAL FUN: Local Athletes Complete In Special Olympics of PA Virtual Summer Games

This summer, over 1,000 athletes participated in the Virtual Summer Games (VSG) weekend Friday, June 12 to Sunday, June 14, 2020. The VSG was hosted by the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania in lue of the normal Summer Games that had to be canceled because of COVID-19. The Special Olympics of Pennsylvania connected athletes and with athletes through Facebook as well as using YouTube videos as reference within emails.
