ECASD Board to Consider Virtual Broadcasts for Sports Spectators

Ellwood City Area School District’s sports could be virtual for spectators come Fall. The board is set to consider a proposal that would include a $2,000 cost to stream home games. “It is a great way to get our sports out there,” said Interim Superintendent Wes Shipley. With the continuation of Covid-19, state mandated restrictions and regulations will cause a new look to the upcoming sports seasons. Bernstine Announces School Districts, Career and Technical Schools Receive Grants

HARRISBURG – Rep. Aaron Bernstine (R-Beaver/Butler/Lawrence) today announced the Continuity of Education Equity Grant (CEEG) has been awarded to school districts and Career and Technical Schools in the 10th District for the 2020-21 academic year. “These grants may be used to purchase computer equipment, such as laptops, tablets and internet hot spots, or used to provide instruction materials, such as paper lessons and coursework,” said Bernstine. “Schools with the highest percentages of students lacking access to resources were given priority in receiving these grants.” Those receiving grants in the 10th District include: Ellwood City Area School District – $8,590. 69th Ellwood City Little League Tournament Starts Monday

The 69th Ellwood City Little League Tournament will begin Monday night at Freidhoff Field at the Ewing Park Baseball Complex. The tournament, which began in 1952, will double-elimination three-game minimum per team format. The teams entered in the tournament are host Ellwood City, Riverside, Neshannock, Seneca Valley North and Mohawk. The teams participating represent some of the most successful baseball programs in western Pennsylvania. These programs have contributed to their respective high schools capturing 68 section titles, 20 WPIAL championships and nine PIAA state crowns. Library Activities for the week of August 10

The Ellwood City Area Public Library offers a variety of weekly activities. Information is available by calling the library at 724-758-6458. NOTE The Library will continue doing curbside pickup. Please call us with the book(s), authors, genre or recommended material you would like to check out and our staff will see that it is in alphabetical order in the lobby for you. Limitations for patrons are 10 books and three, either books on CD or DVD’s, per person. In a published document on the Ellwood City School District website, the school offers question and answer document for parents regarding the district’s reopening plans.  The reopening plan was posted on the school district website on July 31. 1. Concerns with hour delay in morning, why morning and not afternoon, please consider afternoon? Lessons will be posted and the teachers will hold office hours during this time. The Lady Wolverines put together another solid team effort and defeated Wilmington on Tuesday evening in a battle for the #1 seed. Ellwood City came away with a hard fought 6-4 victory. Ellwood City got the scoring started in the top of the 1st inning. Kennedy Brown led off the game with a walk and stole second base. 7th Annual Pine Valley Ride for Hope Scheduled In September

Pine Valley’s annual motorcycle Ride for Hope on September 12th is just 5 weeks away. This year, a meal will be served and will be accompanied by musical entertainment provided by the classic rock band Street Level. All proceeds benefit Pine Valley Camp, now in it’s 25th year of serving at-risk youth. The event will go on rain or shine, and in case of rain a shorter bike route will be taken. The cost is $30 for drivers, $15 for passengers, and $15 for walk-in diners. Drivers get a shirt and both passengers and drivers get a meal as well….

Longtime Local Grocery Store Loccisano’s To Close; To Re-Open As Shop ‘n Save

For over a century, residents of Ellwood City have gone to locally owned and operated Loccisano’s for any and all of their grocery based needs. People have come miles to fill suitcases and coolers full with the meat they sell. However, this week, the business that has lived in this town since 1916 announced its upcoming closure.  The grocery store will close after business on Sunday, August 16, 2020.  The store will reopen as Dave’s Hometown Shop ‘n Save on Monday, August 17, 2020 under new local ownership.
