Ellwood City Historical Society Annual Picnic

The Ellwood City Area Historical Society will host its annual picnic beginning at 6 p.m. Sept. 11 in Ewing Park’s shelter No. 8, which is located in the back loop of the park.

The event is open to the public and those attending are asked to bring a covered dish to share and their own table service.

The society will furnish the meat, drinks and dessert.

The guest speaker will be Dan Vogler, Lawrence County commissioner chairman, who will talk on two subjects.

The first is entitled “Lawrence County’s Changing Map” and the second is entitled “How Would You Like To Be In John Powers’ Shoes?”.   The first part involves how Lawrence County’s map has changed since the early 1900’s with the formation of new boroughs, the changing of a township to a borough and the merger of Ellwood City Borough and Hazel Dell Borough.

The second part deals with how incoming Lawrence County District Attorney John Powers had four homicide cases to deal with within the first four months of his taking office in 1931, including a homicide in Ellwood City.
