Fine Arts Festival

On Tuesday, May 16, the public is invited to attend the inaugural spring Fine Arts Festival at Lincoln Junior-Senior High School.

The show, which is free to the public, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.  Student work will be on display through the first floor and library, and refreshments will be served in the cafeteria. Following the festival, the choral department’s spring concert will be held in the Leslie Szabo Jr. Memorial Auditorium under the direction of Felecia Greco and Laura Adams.  Tickets for the spring concert are $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and students. They can be purchased at the door, starting one hour before the concert.

Amanda Hatkevich, Lincoln’s new art teacher, and Lori Hudeck, English department chair, are organizing the festival in order to showcase the work of Lincoln High School students.

“It is extremely important for students to have their work on display,” said Hatkevich, “It showcases their skills in a public setting for parents, classmates, faculty, and the community to see. Parent, school, and community wide support is important to help advocate for our schools and our art programs. Our students have worked so hard this year and I can’t wait to show off all of their artistic talent.”

Hatkevich will curate the displays in the library on the second floor.  The displays will feature artwork from 9-12th grade Basic Drawing, Color and Design, Painting, and Graphics students. A variety of mediums and subject matter will be represented, including watercolor paintings, acrylic paintings, sculptures, drawings, and more.

“Visualization is a key skill for students to develop to help them with comprehension,” said Hudeck, “so I try to incorporate art projects in my novel units to help students picture the events of the novel. I also use art and color study to help students understand the concepts of tone and mood, which is why I use art in so many poetry assignments.”

She was so impressed with the work her students created that she knew the community needed to see the results as well.  Among the projects to be displayed on the first floor are watercolor paintings completed by seventh grade reading students as part of a novel study and a variety of poems written by seventh grade English students.  Films created by Hudeck’s Film Short Production students will be shown and complimentary copies of the high school’s new literary magazine, Love, Laugh, Lit, will be available to the public.
