BC3 Golf Outing Draws 110, Raises Record $90K to Support Student Scholarships

(Butler, PA) The 23rd annual golf outing to support student scholarships and other initiatives at Butler County Community College raised a record $90,000 on Aug. 3, according to Ruth Purcell, executive director of the BC3 Education Foundation Inc., and brings the total generated since 1996 to $908,000.

“There is such a dedicated group of sponsors, volunteers and golfers who make this event a success,” Purcell said, “but we are really celebrating this year.”

Farmers National Bank of Emlenton served as the title sponsor of the BC3 Education Foundation golf outing for the ninth year in a row.

“We are grateful to the many people who contribute to the success of the BC3 golf outing, especially Farmers National Bank of Emlenton,” Purcell said. “Farmers’ team members provide leadership to the golf committee, recruit sponsors and volunteer at the event. It is just a great partnership.”

Frank Cole, Bill Ford, Dave Matteoni and Bill James, representing International Quality Consultants, Butler, finished second; and Taylor Troiano, Tony Deriggi, Bebe Troiano and Bucky Troilo, representing UPMC, ended third in the event that attracted 110 golfers.

Ray Lassinger Jr., representing Associated Ceramics & Technology, Sarver, won closest to the pin on No. 5; Jerry Patterson, DMKCG, Cranberry Township, on No. 7; Tyler Friel, AJ Gallagher, Pittsburgh, on No. 14; and John Anderson, DMKCG, on No. 15.

Taylor Troiano had the longest drive on No. 10; and Felicia Leksono, PNC Bank, had the longest putt on No. 18.

The BC3 Education Foundation uses funds raised at the golf outing to support student scholarships that are not endowed, Purcell said, adding that recipients of BC3’s President’s Scholarship benefit from unrestricted money.

“Making education affordable is needed”

BC3’s President’s Scholarship is a full-tuition award presented annually to students in the Top 10 percent of their graduating class at any of Butler County’s public high schools and who enroll at BC3 the following semester. A cyber school student counted in those public schools’ graduating classes is also eligible.

“Funds raised at the outing also support special projects,” Purcell said, “and enable BC3 to provide students with opportunities beyond the classroom.”

A student loan crisis exists nationally, said Benjamin Holland, Butler County’s controller who participated in the outing for the fifth year and represented Maher Duessel, Butler.

“Making education affordable is needed,” Holland said, “and it is great to see that BC3 is a leader in that.”
