The Riverside School Board voted Monday to reorganize the current 19 food service positions into 15. One cafeteria worker has decided to retire and three are moving to different part-time positions in the district.
According to Shawn Plassmeyer, school board president, the districts goal is to eliminate jobs naturally, through retirement or otherwise.
One cafeteria worker decided to retire, and the board is waiting to hear back from several others who are considering doing the same. The district saved approximately $40,000 with that one retirement. If several others also decide to take a retirement package, the district will be closed to being in the “black” as far as finances go.
The decision to eliminate three food service positions is due to the board’s vote last month to consolidate middle and high school kitchens. The district saw a $163,000 loss last year.
Food Service Administrator, Randy Walker, was asked by the board to figure out a way to efficiently consolidate kitchens.
“Consolidating kitchens will bring the district very close to breaking even, in addition to eliminating jobs through attrition,” Plassmeyer said.
Riverside is one of the few districts that employ full-time food service workers with benefits. During Monday’s meeting, the board also approved a budget of $24,926,535 for the 2018-19 school year.
