Interviews with the leads and senior director:

Bobby Freed (Shrek)
Sophomore, participating in his second musical.

Q: What brought you to this role in particular?

  • Most of us watched it as a kid. When I saw Shrek for the first time, I never thought I’d be playing him later.

Q: What is unique about the costume?

  • I’ll be green and wearing a fat suit and cowl.

Q: What is your favorite number?

  • “Who I’d Be” because it’s the first time Shrek starts to show his feelings and not be a mean ogre. It’s also the one song all three leads sing together.

Q: What other activities are you involved in?

  • Chamber ensemble, and I started Brazilian jujitsu classes at a place in Rochester.

Nash Ridgely (The Donkey)
Senior, has participated in musical for four years.

Q: What do you like about your character?

  • He’s the best character. He’s comedic. I get to have fun the whole time and channel my inner Ed Murphy.

Q: What is your favorite number?

  • “Make a Move” because it’s all about me, and blind mice come out to perform with me. It’s when I catapult into Tina Turner territory.

Q: What will the audience like?

  • It’s fun for kids but also has adult humor that kids won’t get.

Q: What other activities are you involved in?

  • Soccer and I run distance in track.

Q: What are your future plans?

  • I just got accepted to the University of Pittsburgh for premed.

Alivia Leyland (Fiona)
Senior, five years performing musicals.

Q: What is unique about this musical?

  • The makeup, tech and costumes. The makeup has to be perfect, and the makeup team tried to make us look as close to the Broadway characters as possible. Our artists said this is the biggest production we’ve done.

Q: What do you like about your character?

  • I love that she gets to dance. She thinks she’s supposed to be a prim and proper princess, but she lashes out sometimes. Then she returns to her proper self. So I got to work on being meaner.

Q: What is your favorite number?

  • “Morning Person.” It’s a big tap dance with rats wearing bow ties and top hats.

Q: What other activities are you involved in?

  • I dance at a studio in Zelienople, I play tennis and I’m in the Riverside chamber ensemble.

Q: What are your future plans?

  • I’ll be attending Baldwin Wallace as a dance and theater arts major.

Shannon Stover, Student Director
Junior, four years participating in musicals and third year as stage director.

Q: What are your responsibilities?

  • I have an assistant, and we each run half the stage. I have to make sure everyone is ready, on time, and dressed. I make sure everyone has their props, and everyone’s fly is up. I also have to manage mic switches and quick costume changes, such as when Alivia transforms from a princes to an ogre.

Q: What do you like about being the director?

  • I really like leading the group and yelling at people to be quiet. I enjoy assigning tasks and being in charge.

Q: What is the hardest part of directing?

  • Keeping everything in control and everyone quiet. Also, never knowing when something will go wrong, such as a costume ripping.

Q: What will the audience like?

  • I think they’ll like the costumes and makeup. The makeup people work as much, if not more, than we do.

Q: What other activities are you involved in?

  • I run cross country and track, and I’m also in chamber ensemble.
