After a several year break, the Ellwood City Kitchen Cabinet is sponsoring the High School Art Department, 3D printer students and parent volunteers to paint windows of buildings and businesses throughout downtown Ellwood City for the holiday season along Lawrence Ave. & Fifth St. on Thursday, Nov. 16 from 8a.m-2p.m.
“Three years ago when we approached the EC Art Club to paint the vacant building windows on the 500 block, it gave a lift to the avenue and the public actually thought the buildings were occupied. We attempted a few times to have it become a seasonal project, but it lacked manpower. We have funds this year to pay for the supplies and we first again approached the EC Art Club they do not have the manpower. We then spoke with Principal Sovich at Lincoln who was excited about the idea and literally within less than 24 hours he established a connection between Ms. Hatkevich, the school’s Fine Arts Director and myself and we were off and running,” Earla Marshall, member of the Kitchen Cabinet stated.
Amanda Hatkevich, Lincoln High School Fine Arts teacher, is new to the idea but believes the experience will be a good one for all involved.
“I will be taking a group of 20-25 9th-12th grade Lincoln High School students downtown on Thursday, November 16th to paint holiday scenes on the windows of businesses and vacant buildings. My students are very nervous and excited to be part of this event. None of us have experience with painting images or signage on windows so it will be a learning experience for all,” she stated.
Hatkevich hopes to make this an annual event or quite possibly a seasonal event, changing the windows quarterly.
The students and volunteers will be using tempera paint mixed with dish soap, dish soap is suppose to help the tempera paint stick to glass. Students will either come with their own sketches or will be provided with them.
