PHOTOS: Passing Games Flourish, But Bobcats Spoil Homecoming

Passing has become a focal point for the Wolverines in the past two weeks as Ellwood has had much success in the quick-strike, quick-score type of plays. Friday’s game was no pushover as well in the passing game; however, the Beaver Bobcats had their own “ace” at the quarterback position, Brodie List, who helped the Bobcats spoil the evening 57-14 on Homecoming night.

The first quarter set the tone for the Bobcats as Beaver scored only one minute into the game when QB Brodie List threw a strike of 37 yards to Harrison Pontoli, starting plenty of the scoring on the evening.

The Wolverines got their first chance on offense after the score, but couldn’t move the ball on three downs and had to punt back to the Bobcats. Once again, Brodie List made quick time of the possession as another pass-filled drive ended with an 18 yard strike to Harrison Pontoli again, now making the score 13-0 in favor of Beaver early.

Ellwood was already behind on the scoreboard, but tried to crawl back into the game. After the first drive being unsuccessful on the ground, the Wolverines went to the air. Freshman QB Ryan Gibbons made quick decisions and was able to get the ball out to players in the open field as wide receiver phenom Luca Botti scampered past the Bobcat defender and caught a pass on the numbers, running into the endzone for the 71 yard touchdown. The 2 point conversion pass was failed as the first quarter ended 13-6 in favor of the Bobcats.

Stats on the evening were all in favor of the Bobcats as Beaver had 200+ yards only after one quarter. Beaver picked up where they left off at in the first quarter, scoring four times before halftime. Brodie List threw his third touchdown, this time to Tyler Wallace 17 yards out. Running backs Gino Mavero and Noah Yates were no pushovers as well – both adding scores of 1 yard and 37 yards respectively. All PAT attempts were good as right before halftime Will Connelly also added a 20 yard field goal, bringing us to halftime with the score reading 37-6 Bobcats.

Homecoming festivities occurred at halftime as both bands played a shortened-show to leave time for the crowning of the 2017 EC Homecoming queen, who was Michaela Magnifico (VIDEO – CLICK HERE).

As the second half kicked off the offense for both teams out-shined the defenses as more points were put up on the board. At the 7:11 mark, Gino Mavero capped off another drive from 7 yards out, making the score 44-6.

The Wolverines struck back once again via the pass by Ryan Gibbons to Luca Botti, this time from 66 yards out. The 2 point pass conversion from Gibbons to Botti was good as the lead was cut to 44-14. Unfortunately for the Wolverines defense, the Bobcats offense just could not be stopped.

Two mores scores by the Bobcats were in the last minutes of the third quarter and fourth quarter, one by Amen Cottrill 4 yards out and Jake Leichliter 4 yards out (PAT by Connelly good), made the final score 57-14 in favor of the Wolverines.

This was the first game the Wolverines defense suffered in all aspects as Beaver’s powerhouse offense could not be contained. The positive note for the Wolverines is the passing game where third string freshman QB Ryan Gibbons has made several great connections with his receiving core, specifically senior WR Luca Botti.

The Wolverines travel another long journey to Derry High school to take on the Derry Trojans – 6-1 (4-1), over 1 hour 30 plus minutes away just outside of Latrobe. You can catch the live stream online and with social media starting 10 minutes before game time, barring any issues with location and internet service.
