Timothy B. Powell, 69

Timothy B. Powell, 69, of Ellwood City passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at Paramount Senior Living in Cranberry.

Born September 10, 1947, Tim was the son of Robert W. and Helen Bauder Powell of Ellwood City. He was married for 46 years to Pamela Sewall Powell as they were married February 20, 1971. His parents and wife survive.

Tim graduated from Lincoln High School in 1965 and furthered his education at Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan. There he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and received his teaching certification. He then returned to Lincoln High School where he taught English for 35 years. In addition to being a school teacher, Tim was a Certified NRA Rifle and Pistol Instructor. He was a successful target shooter winning many local and state awards. While teaching at Lincoln in the early 1970’s, he and a colleague started the Rifle Team. In its second year, they won the PA State Championship. Tim also developed and ran the “Buck Pool” for over 20 years at the high school. He was a life member of the Wampum Rod and Gun Club, the National Wild Turkey Federation, and a life member of the National Rifle Association.

Tim was an avid sportsman. He loved hunting for deer and turkey and especially enjoyed archery hunting. Being in the outdoors was his passion. He not only treasured his time in the woods hunting, but also enjoyed running, bicycling, skiing (especially cross country), snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and kayaking as well as riding his motorcycles. Tim ran in the Ellwood City 10K for many years and also in Pittsburgh for the Marathon and the Great Race. He also competed and won awards in various bike races and triathlons. During the first 2 years of the Ellwood Arts, Crafts and Foods Festival, Tim organized and sponsored the Bicycle Race using Pittsburgh Circle as the race route.

Tim also loved spending time at his camp in Chautauqua County, New York. When he wasn’t hunting there, he enjoyed planting fruit and nut trees, pines, and food plots for wildlife. While in New York, Tim also helped on a tree farm with pruning and grafting experimental nut trees.

In addition to his parents, Bob and Helen, and his wife, Pam, survivors include: a daughter, Tiffany A. Powell (Michael Horanski); son, Robert O. Powell (Abigail); sister, Susan (Terry) Campbell; brother, Zachary (Jacki) Powell; and three grandchildren, Preston and Evan Powell and Aidan Horanski.

Tim was preceded in death by his grandparents, Clifford and Hilda Bauder and William and Catherine Powell.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, May 21 from 2 pm until the time of the memorial service at 5 pm at the Marshall Funeral Home 200 Fountain Ave. Ellwood City. Pastor James O’Hara of the Castlewood Alliance Church will officiate.
