CCBC Appoints Coaches for New Women’s Basketball and Women’s and Men’s Cross Country Teams

Monaca, PA – With the goals of enriching the student life program and recruiting more local student-athletes, Community College of Beaver County has added three new sports that will commence in the 2017-18 academic year: women’s basketball, and women’s and men’s cross country. Two new coaches will join the athletics team and continue the tradition of developing successful student-athletes on and off the court.

Chris Visgitis has been appointed head women’s basketball coach and Allison Churovia will serve as head coach for both the women’s and men’s cross country teams.  As two seasoned coaches, Visgitis and Churovia share similar plans for developing their players’ skills on the court as well as helping them become successful young adults and college students.

“These two individuals are the perfect candidates to lead CCBC’s new athletic teams to success,” said John Ashaolu, Director of Athletics and Student Programs. “With their experiences as both players and coaches, they will be able to shape these young athletes into students who are successful both in collegiate competition and in the classroom.”

The College made the decision to add the three sports and start recruiting coaches in late summer 2016 with the goal of recruiting players in spring 2017 for the 2017-18 sports season.

“The decision to add women’s basketball and women’s and men’s cross country teams is due to the growing demand and popularity of both sports in Beaver County and the surrounding region. These additional athletic teams will provide local high school students the opportunity to continue participating in the sports they love while receiving a quality education close to home, saving money, and preparing for transfer to a four-year college or university program after graduation,” said Ashaolu.

Visgitis has 23 years of coaching experience that includes both assistant and head coaching positions at the high school and collegiate levels. Visgitis has played high school basketball in the Pittsburgh City League and NJCAA basketball for Community College of Allegheny County.

“Many of my philosophies for building a young athlete’s character and confidence come from developing a series of student-athlete books and programs with a former coach,” said Coach Visgitis. “I have gained priceless experience through assisting successful coaches and programs that I will utilize at CCBC to help shape these student-athletes into successful young women.”

Churovia has 18 years of cross country coaching experience at the high school level, coaching locally for Central Valley High School. While there, she also served as an assistant and head coach for the men’s and women’s varsity track and field teams.

“I know the importance of student-athletes being immersed in both a strong academic and athletic program while in school,” said Coach Churovia. “I look forward to stepping into this role on the collegiate level and establishing a top-notch program, allowing students to continue their running career while earning a quality education at CCBC.”

Churovia holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a master’s degree in education. In addition to her coaching experience, Churovia also served as a mathematics instructor at Central Valley High School for 24 years.

CCBC is an NJCAA Division II school and plays home games in the CCBC Dome. The women’s basketball and women’s and men’s cross country teams are currently recruiting to start in the 2017-18 academic year.
