Benjamin “Ben” Liss, 88

liss-benBenjamin “Ben” Liss, 88, of Pershing Street, Ellwood City, passed away on Friday, October 14, 2016 at Golden Hills Nursing Center in New Castle.

Born in Ellwood City on February 21, 1928, Ben was the son of the late John and Anna Kuliga Liss.  Ben married the former Rose Genone on October 5, 1957 and she preceded him in death on January 13, 2013.  A 1946 graduate of Lincoln High School, Ben worked at the Ellwood City Tube Mill until it closed and worked at US Steel in Sharon, PA until his retirement.  He served in the US Army during the 1950’s. Ben was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish and the Polish Club.  In years past, Ben could be seen walking daily in Ewing Park picking up litter.  For his efforts, he received the Environmental Hero Award from the organizers of Ellwood City’s annual Earth Day observance.  Ben was also known for his fence posts in front of his house where he displayed the numerous Happy Meal toys he found while picking up litter in the park.

Ben in survived by his children and their spouses; Pam and Leroy Ball of Ellwood City, Gary and Margie Liss of New Freedom, PA, John and Debbie Liss of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and five grandchildren; Benjamin, Jessica, Corey, Dana and Brian Liss.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Ben was preceded in death by three brothers; Ben in infancy, Louis and Walter Liss.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 18th at 10:30 AM at Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Mark Thomas.  Interment will follow in Locust Grove Cemetery where the Veteran’s Honor Guard will offer full military rites.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Ben’s name to the American Cancer Society.  Ben’s family would like to thank the staff at Golden Hills for their kindness and care over the last year.  They would also ask that if you are walking in Ewing Park and you see litter, do what Ben would do and pick it up.
