Agostinelli’s Walk Off Triple Beats Butler, Junior High Softball Team Wins Third Straight

Maura Agostinelli’s line shot off of the fence in left center field plated Taylor Covert as the Lady Wolverines won in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning. In a classic pitcher’s duel that saw both teams combine for just five hits, the Wolverines were able to come through with a 5-4 victory.

Madi Krugh was sensational in the circle as she posted the first double digit strikeout performance of her career. She went the distance with a sparkling two hitter. Over seven innings, the lanky eighth grader fanned 10 and walked six.

In addition to Agostinelli’s bomb, Chloe Sturgeon and Taylor Covert each contributed a single to the winning effort. Agostinelli and Sturgeon each scored once while Covert scored three times from her lead off position.

The defense was solid once again as shortstop Stormy Fiello made the play of the night from deep in the hole. The feisty freshman ranged far to her right to backhand a grounder and showed off her strong arm to nip the runner at first to end the fifth inning. Outfielders Makinley Magill and Agostinelli each tracked down fly balls while catcher Maria Ioanilli was a wall behind the plate.

After tonight’s big win and the doubleheader sweep of Mars on Tuesday by scores of 19-2 and 16-1, the quickly improving squad will look to grab win number four as North Allegheny visits Steifel Park on Thursday evening. The game will follow the Ellwood City/Mohawk varsity battle starting at 5 p.m.Photos submitted.
