Francis C. Piper, Sr., 89

Francis C. Piper, Sr., 89, formerly of Franklin Twp. passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016 in the Mill Creek Community Hospital in Erie.

Francis was born on March 2, 1927 in Ellwood City to the late Joseph C. and Frances Fox Piper. He had attended Lincoln High School before joining the U.S. Navy on Jan. 11, 1945. He served with the 28th and 125th NCB until his discharge on June 17, 1946. He was awarded the Pacific Theater Ribbon with one star, Good Conduct Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and the Victory Medal. Francis worked at the Babcock & Wilcox Steel Mill in Koppel until he retired in 1984.

He also was a member of the Knox Presbyterian Church, and the Franklin Twp. Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years. He served as the Fire Chief for the department for several years. Francis was also long time member of the Beaver County Fireman’s Association, and the VFW.

Francis is survived by his wife, Alice Creese Piper, whom he married on Aug. 9, 1947, his daughter, Jean (Tom) Bolan of Erie, his son, Francis C. (Karen) Piper, Jr. of Virginia, his two grandchildren, Nadine (Mark) Hummel and Kate (Nick) Morales, and his five great-grandchildren, Maxwell and Jack Hummel, Mira, Seth, and Etta Morales.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Thomas Bruce Piper, his sister, Lenora “Dolly” McAllister, and his brothers, George, Everett, Walter, Joseph, and William Piper.

Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Samuel Teolis Funeral Home, Inc. and Cremation Services. A Service for Francis will be held on Sunday at 6:00pm in the funeral home with Andy Shaffer, chaplain for the Franklin Twp. Volunteer Fire Department officiating. Members of the Veterans Honor Guard are asked to meet at the funeral home on Sunday by 5:50 p.m. to conduct full military honors. Entombment will be at the Sylvanian Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum.
