Rotary Club January Meeting

The Rotary Club of Ellwood City meets every Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Connequenessing Country Club.

In January, the club’s programs included Vocation Service presentation by Gerald Crowley. He discussed his life as a lawyer and his years in law practice. He’s a graduate of Temple Law School in Philadelphia.

Jeff Magnifico, Deputy EMA Coordinator, coordinates emergency services including paramedics for a 13 county area including Lawrence and Beaver Counties. He also spoke on the recent emergency that happened at INMETCO.

Suzanne Bleakney, Ellwood City Community Partnership founder, explained how this organization will provide a full range of social services to all income classes. There will be a support with materials things, guidance, meeting the needs of basic human existence, such as meals for the hungry, parenting and pregnancy assistance, as well as help for the homeless, emergency services and private counseling. The group is located at 309 Fifth Street and open Monday-Friday. Donations from the public are needed. There are more than 20 programs, including adult literacy and drug and alcohol recovery.

Club Assembly reported on the following items:
The Duquesne University Tamburitizan Performance will be Sunday, March 20 at 3 p.m. in the Lincoln High School Auditorium. Tickets go on sale Wednesday, Feb. 10. Advanced ticket sales are $20 plus fee and $25 plus fee at the door. Members of the club will be doing a ticket sale at the library on Feb. 19 and 20 and March 4 and 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The club will be sponsoring students to attend ROVA and RYLA. ROVA is a leadership program for students at the Vo-Tech and RYLA is a leadership program held at Westminster College. With the help of the Ellwood City and Riverside High School Guidance Counselors, students are chosen to attend these program.

The Assistant District Governor, Jeff Simmons, stopped by for a visit. He spoke briefly on some upcoming District Rotary events scheduled for April and May.
