Ellwood Wolverine Wrestlers Warm Up for Season at Hampton Team Duels

The Ellwood City Wolverine wrestlers had a fine individual showing at the Hampton Team Duels with 25 match wins. The competition, held at Hampton High School on Saturday, Dec. 5, pitched five teams against each other in a tournament series and inaugurates the varsity wrestling season.

The teams competing were Ellwood City, Fox Chapel, Hampton, Mount Lebanon, Mount Pleasant and Riverview

Although the Wolverines only won as a team against Riverview, Coach Craig Alberts was pleased with the individual results. “It was one of our best showings at this tournament,” Alberts said. “We usually struggle as a team here because most of the teams are AAA, but it gets us warmed up for the season.”

The veterans on the team had an excellent showing. Returning junior Tyler Alberts, who advanced to PIAA competition last year, won his five matches, beating difficult opponents from Fox Chapel and Mount Pleasant. Seniors Carter MacMurdo and Christian Kerr were each 4-1.

Freshman Donavin Chambers started off his varsity career winning four of his matches. “He really showed his strength in a close match against a very good Mount Pleasant wrestler, Mike Novak,” Alberts said regarding the match Chambers lost.

Sophomores Tyler Baird and Angello Battaglia also won four of five matches.

First year wrestler Johnathan Jefferson was close to finishing 3-2 but inexperience got the better of him, Alberts said.
