Thomas Maxwell, 68

Thomas Maxwell, 68, of Ellwood City, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015, at his residence. Born Jan. 1, 1947, in Ellwood City, he was the son of the late James A. and Elizabeth Jean McMurdo Maxwell. He was married to Joyce McDevitt Maxwell, who passed away in 2005. Tom retired in 2008 after 40 years of service as an accountant for the Heritage Valley Health System.

Tom was a poster child for polio when he was eight years old. Despite his handicaps, he saved the neighbor boy from drowning in his youth. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, who belonged to the N.R.A. and collected coins and guns. He enjoyed building models with his grandchildren.

Survivors include a son, Thomas (Tonya) Maxwell Jr. of Ellwood City; three sisters, Betsy Meyer of Ellwood City, Juju Morabito of New Brighton, and Sally Jo Fraser of West Pittsburg, and two grandsons, Austin Javens and James Maxwell.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James Leroy Maxwell, in January of this year.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Marshall Funeral Home, 200 Fountain Ave., Ellwood City. Funeral services will be held at the Marshall Funeral Home, Ellwood City, on Wednesday, Nov. 25, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Locust Grove Cemetery.
