Jacob M. “Jake” Mazzanti, Sr., 92

Jacob M. “Jake” Mazzanti, Sr., 92, of Ellport passed away in his residence on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015 at 11:22 am.

Born in Ellwood City on Feb. 2, 1923, Jacob was the son of the late Alfredo and Mary Lordo Mazzanti. He married the former Mollie Nocera on July 9, 1947. Jake graduated from Lincoln High School in 1942 and then served in the US Army during WWII. He retired from US Steel in 1977 where he worked as an inspector. A member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Jake was an avid golfer and bowler. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. A talented guitar and banjo player, Jake was dubbed “the Banjo Wizard” at age 10. He and his band, the Shaglevel Cider Hounds were inducted into the Music Hall of Fame in Akron, OH. Jake loved telling stories, and most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Jake is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mollie Mazzanti of Ellport, his children and their spouses; Virginia and Richard Rodgers of Ellport, Jacob, Jr. and Cynthia Mazzant of Ellport, Jeri and Ron Rough of Ellport, David and Kimberly Mazzant of Sharpsville, Joseph and Marsha Mazzant Hermitage, Dan and Teri Mazzant of Ellwood City, Mark and Tammy Mazzant of Ellport, a sister, Lucy Rutter of Ellwood City, 23 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Jake was preceded in death by six brothers; Pete, Tony, Ames, George, John and Carlo Mazzanti, a grandson, Danny Mazzant, Jr., and a great-granddaughter, Giovanna Mazzant.

Friends will be received on Thursday, Oct. 29 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Joseph A. Tomon, Jr. Funeral Home and Crematory, 97 Grim Ave., Ellport.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Church in Ellwood City. Interment will follow in Holy Redeemer Cemetery. Full military rites will offered by the Veteran’s Honor Guard.
