Jerome J. “Jerry” Cowan, 81

Jerome J. “Jerry” Cowan, 81, of Slippery Rock Twp. passed away on Monday, Oct. 5, 2015 in the Carriage Court assisted living facility.

Mr. Cowan was born on April 20, 1934 in Ellwood City to the late Wilbert and Fay G. Gallaher Cowan. He is a member of the Lincoln High School class of 1952, where he had played football and baseball. Mr. Cowan enlisted with the U.S. Air Force on Feb. 24, 1954 and served with the 497th Recon Tech Squadron until his discharge on Oct. 8, 1957. He had been awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal Clasp, and the Army Occupation Medal.

Jerry had worked for the J&L Steel Co. in Pittsburgh as a computer programmer for over 30 years. He then worked as a bank courier until his retirement. He is also a member of the East Brook Presbyterian Church. Jerry is a past member of the MOOSE Lodge #93 in Ellwood City, and enjoyed watching car racing, and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Mr. Cowan is survived by his three daughters, Kathryn (Alfred) Mazzanti of Ellport, Susanna (Don) DiFrischia of New Castle, and Jane (Ken) Erickson of Chantilly, Va., his son, Joseph Cowan of Virginia Beach, Va., his 7 grandchildren, Melissa (Matt) D’Amico, Kevin (Lauren) Mazzanti, Amanda Smith, Jennifer DiFrischia, Madison Cowan, Jessica Barron, and Lori Erickson, and his nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his four step-daughters, Karen (Andrew) Clark of Texas, Wendy (Steve) McPherson of Cosica, Pa, Tawnee (Dave) Hunter of New Wilmington, and Amy (Rich) Crashaw of Oxford, Pa. Mr. Cowan was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Anna Jayn Cowan whom he married on Dec. 5, 1983 and passed away in 2003.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 4 to 7  p.m. in the Samuel Teolis Funeral Home, Inc. and Cremation Services. A Service for Mr. Cowan will be held on Friday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. Members of the Veterans Honor Guard are asked to meet at the funeral home on Friday by 6:50 p.m. to conduct full military honors. Interment will be at the Castleview Cemetery in New Castle. Memorial donations in Mr. Cowan’s name may be made to the East Brook Presbyterian Church, 3727 State. Road, New Castle, PA 16101.
